Introduction: DIY WILD MAY FRUIT FLY TRAP

VERY BASIC.

Three THINGS
Bottle
Teaspoon of Vegimite
Boiling Water.

Tools
Scissors

Step 1: Cut Two Holes in Ur Bottle

Cut a hole with scissors, half way up.
Then one of the otherside.

See picture.

Step 2: Fill Ur Bottle

Disolve a teaspoon of Vegimite, in a cup of boiling water.
Leave to cool.

The only thing that attacts more flies and for longer is the fly lure from www.wildmay.com, just found vegimite is more easily accessable, but if your really keen to kill most of the local fruit fly population, i'd really recommend trying this!
See attached picture

P.s. Eventually the Fruit flies lose interest in a week or so thats when its time to empty the dead flies and refill the bottles. Guess the dead flies scare em...

Step 3: Hang It Near Your Fruit Trees

Make 2 holes in the cap, and thread a string through.
Then tie the string which makes a loop or tie it to the tree.

Step 4: Catch the Flies

Sit back and enjoy that your fruit trees are now nearly fruit fly free.
No Pesticide on your fruit or plants is necessary!

And watch the flies enter and drown..
Muhahahahahahahaha

Here's a picture of what a few second later looked like for me.

Occasionally refill, and get rid of dead flies..
Easy..

They recommend 4 traps per hectare, but i have 6 around a townhouse garden..

Vegemite is not green, it's a very dark brown...it is not from Europe but Australia and for those with an educated palate (Australians) it is delicious on toast.

Thanks for tuning up this Instructable. I'm not sure I know what Vegemite is but I'm glad there's a picture. Now I know what to look for.

Chuck44, Vegemite is an AUSTRALIAN ONLY edible product, It is NOT nasty at all, please do your research before you make comments you have no idea about.

One drop of dish soap will lower the surface tension of the water and ensure the flies drown.

Could you please reshoot your pictures. I can't tell what I'm looking at. I can see a Phillips head screw head in step 3, but I can't tell where the screw is. Or what part of the bottle I'm looking at. I can't identify anything but the sky in the last picture (step 4). Is the picture right-side-up? Does a piece of banana or orange peel work as well as the chemical attractant? They sure seem to work in my house.

The simply screw holds it to the house, simply put a screw on the end of a screw driver and poke it through the hole you just made, screwing through the interior of the bottle into something. Attactant has to be liquid they drown, try boiling water with those things and use that water when it has cooled. If it works let me know.. please.
