Introduction: DJI Monitor Shade

I love my DJI Phantom 4 but trying to fly in the sun can be a problem. Even with the screen brightness turned all the way up, the image can wash out on a sunny day making it difficult to see where you are flying. DJI offers a monitor shade that you can purchase but you can easily make one. This shade will keep the sun off your smart phone or tablet while you fly. And it folds into a compact size when not in use for easy transport.

Step 1: Materials

You don't need much in the way of materials. You can even skip the covering if you want and just use the cardboard if you reinforce the joints with some tape. I used foam craft sheets for the covering but you can use whatever you want. Keep the inside covering dark for the best shade and keep the outside covering light to keep the heat off your electronics.

  1. Cardboard sheet (I used the back of old desk calendar.)
  2. Foam sheet
  3. Spray glue
  4. Velcro (I used 3M Industrial Strength.)
  5. Hobby knife or razor

Step 2: Layout

Draw out your pattern on the cardboard. The dimensions in the photo fit my Nexus 7" tablet. It will fit any smartphone and most smaller tablets. You can adjust the dimensions to your device.

Step 3: Cut

Cut out the cardboard. Once you cut out the shape, score the outside of the fold lines with your knife to help the pieces bend. I taped over all of the folds to reinforce them. Cut holes for the USB cable where appropriate for your device.

Step 4: Glue

Spray glue on the inside of the cardboard and your dark piece of covering. Wait until the glue is tacky and press the pieces together.

Step 5: Trim

Trim the covering with your knife leaving about 2 mm all around to seal the edges.

Step 6: Glue and Trim Again

Spray glue on the inside of the cardboard and your light piece of covering. Wait until the glue is tacky and press the pieces together. Trim the outside covering even with the inside covering. Be sure to press the edges together firmly so the layers don't separate.

Step 7: Finish

Bend the cover along the fold lines, pressing hard to get a good crease. Place strips of velcro along the inside to hold everything in shape when in use. Your shade is done.

Step 8: Fly!

Now you can fly with confidence knowing you will be able to see where you are going.
