Desk / Workbench Tidy

About: I hope i can show you that you really dont need to be a master craftsman to create and build great projects, and hopefully inspire you to start making yourself. I will try upload a video every Monday but du...

Following on from my last few projects, revolving sorting my workshop, i was sick of either having loads of pens and pencils all over the workbench or never being able to find the f***ing things!

So i decided to make a desk or rather workbench tidy that would match the rest of my tool holders.

I ended up making two, one was for more fine detail work like laying out joints and the other for prep, basically cutting to size and thickness etc.

Although i have these "Floating" if you removed the dowels they would also work great on any desk.

Hope you like it.

Step 1: Shape & Glue Up

To start i glued up 2 pieces of scrap that where all the same size length and width.

Basically making a block, but for some interest and contrast i used some light and dark wood.

Once the glue was dry i planed it down square and flat on all sides.

Step 2: Cut & Shape

Next i cut the piece in two down the center and planed all the edges heavily to give it some shape.

Step 3: Layout & Pen Holes

Now this part would be down to what you want to store on this, for me it was pen, pencil, ruler and rubber.

So to make a slot for the ruler i just used my saw (luckily the balde was the right thickness) and cut a channel that the ruler can just rest in.

For the pens and pencils i used a 8mm drill bit, drilling about 5/6,mm deep.

And for the sharpie pens i used a 12mm bit doing the same thing.

Next i drilled and glued in some dowels making sure not to run into the holes for the pens.

Step 4: Attach & Fill

Thats pretty much it, next just drill some matching holes on the wall and slot it in.

It works great everything is easy to see and reach and hopefully i cant lose them now.

As i said it would also work great without the dowels for any desk.

Hope you like it.
