Introduction: Digital Light Wand ENG/FIN

This tutorial is not originally mine, but i tweaked it a little and also made full instructables for here.

Original tutorial is by Micheal Ross a.k.a TxPilot and his tutorial can be found over here: http://mrossphoto.com/digital-light-wand/

So, about DLW a little. Its a stick with controllable LEDs and its used for light painting. On this version of DLW i'm using 120 LEDs on a 2 meter stick which can be take apart and use only 60LEDs/1m. LED strip is controlled by Arduino Mega with 16x2 LCD + Keypad Shield.

For those who want to go extreme, you could use LED strips with 144LED/1m and I'm pretty sure that the power supply shown in this instructable will be enough.

I Won't take any responsibility for any damage for yourself, your home or your equipment for following this instructable. Be Smart, Be Safe.

Alkuperäinen tutoriaali on Michael Ross:n käsialaa a.k.a TxPilot ja hänen tutoriaalinsa löytää täältä: http://mrossphoto.com/digital-light-wand/

Step 1: Step 1: Parts & Tools Needed

Here is the list and places where i found all the items for this DLW. // All items without link is bough from my local hardware stores.

Parts:

Tools:

  • Drill
  • M4 Screw thread tap
  • Soldering Iron
  • Some Screwdrivers

Alla lista paikoista joista hankin tarvittavat osat tähän DLW:hen.

Parts:

Tools:

  • Porakone
  • M4 Kierreterä
  • Juotoskolvi
  • Ruuvimeisseleitä

Step 2: Step 2: Assembling Frame

First we assemble the frame for DLW.
I used 4 pieces 1m long aluminium U-Profiles for assembly. 2x 15,5mm x 15,5mm x 1,5mm profile and 2x 12,5mm x 7,5mm x 1,5mm Profile

Pic 1. 15,5mm x 1,5mm U-Profile Datasheet
Pic 2. 12,5mm x 7,5mm U-Profile Datasheet
Pic 3. You have to assemble smaller profile inside bigger profile to make a "tunnel" to the bottom of bigger profile.
Pic 4 & 5. Notice that smaller profiles have a little offset from the bigger profile. This allows you to get small gap between bigger profiles back.
Pic 6. I drilled 8mm hole to the profiles intersection to allow led strip cables run through.
Pic 7. Gap between bigger profiles for led cable connection.

Use the 3.5mm drill to make some holes to the side of the stick and then make threads to those holes for connecting profiles together firmly.

You can also Drill some holes to the back of the profiles for connecting handle.

Ensimmäisenä kasaamme kehikon DLW:lle.

Käytin neljää 1m pituista Alumiini U-profiilia kasauksessa. 2x 15,5mm x 15,5mm x 1,5mm profiilia ja 2x 12,5mm x 7,5mm x 1,5mm Profiilia.

Pic 1. 15,5mm x 1,5mm U-Profiilin piirustukset
Pic 2. 12,5mm x 7,5mm U-Profiilin piirustukset
Pic 3.

Step 3: Step 3: Electronics

Connect all electronics by following schematic.

On the Pic 2. I have soldered the LED strip cables "backwards", remember that 8mm hole we did?, cables go throught there and then to middle gap we left and both strips are connected there. This allows us to take stick apart if needed and use only half of it.

You have to make sure that when you make connections, only other half of LED strip is connected to arduino and power supply. Other connects straight to LED strip.

You must also connect 1000uf 6.3V capacitor to power supply output leads for preventing voltage spikes for LEDs.

Also connect one 470ohm resistor between arduino and firs LEDs data line. This prevents burning the first LED.

Using items i linked SD card pins are following for Arduino Mega:

SD PIN --> Arduino pin

5V -----> Any 5V pin
CS -----> 53
MOSI ----> 51
SCK -----> 52
MISO ----> 50
GND ----> Any GND pin

You also have to connect LED strips Data line to Arduino pin 31 (default, can be changed in code)

For me max amperage that LEDs have eaten on use is somewhere near 1 amp, my linked DC-DC Converter should be good up to 5 amps.

Toinen LED nauha kytketään suoraan toisen LED nauhan liittimeen.

Sinun täytyy myös kytkeä 1000uf 6.3V kondensaattori virtalähteen ulostulo napoihin jotta vältytään virtapiikeiltä käynnistyksen yhteydessä.

Lisäksi juota Arduinon ja ensimmäisen ledin väliseen datakaapeliin 470ohm vastus. Tämä estää ensimmäisen ledin palamisen käytössä.

Käyttämällä osia joita linkkasin alussa SD modulin kytkennät arduinoon on seuraavat:

SD PIN --> Arduino pin
5V -----> Any 5V pin
CS -----> 53
MOSI ----> 51
SCK -----> 52
MISO ----> 50
GND ----> Any GND pin

Kytke LED nauhan datalinja arduinon pinniin 31. (Oletus, voi muuttaa koodissa.)

Minulla suurin virrankulutus LEDeillä on ollut noin 1 ampeerin luokkaa, linkkaamani DC-DC muuntaja kuitenkin pitäisi kestää 5A.

Step 4: Step 4: Setting Up Arduino

Setting up arduino is easy.

I provide you with 2 versions of DLW Sketch both work with Arduino 1.6.5

- DLW_Sketch from original tutorial code.

- Light_wand_WS2812B_dgilliver is modified version by David Gilliver.

- Adafruit_NeoPixel-master this is must needed library for LED strips to work with arduino. Make sure you read this guide from Adafruit for installing library and using these LED strips: Neopixel Uberguide

Upload files. make sure all configs are right and make some 24bit BMP images to go for it.

For more information about making right pictures for DLW. Please refer to original tutorial, link is at the first page.
