Step 1: You Will Need

Equipment

Mixer or spoon

Bowl

Scale

Bread Knife

Table spoon

Teaspoon

Fork

Measuring Cup

Ingredients

6 oz Self Raising Flour

6 oz Butter

5 oz Sugar

3 Medium eggs

1 Cap of Vanilla Essence

1/3 Teaspoon Baking Powder

1/4 Teaspoon Baking Soda

Cocoa Powder ( measure by eye, depends on how much chocolate you want in it)

1 Cup Milk

Nutella (optional)

NOTE If you want it to be a plain vanilla cake then don't add the cocoa powder

Step 2: Method

Pre-heat oven for 170 degrees Celsius. Get your cake tins ready by oiling them or by applying your grease proof paper.

In a bowl mix the sugar and butter, whip up until soft. Add the eggs and whisk. At this point you can add in the vanilla essence, baking powder and baking soda, whisk it all up. Once it's mixed add the flour in a little at a time and whisk. Add the cup of milk and whisk. Then finally add the cocoa powder and whisk.

I find whisking everything separately ensures it is evenly distributed it also whips in air and makes the cake more fluffy and soft

Scoop the mixture out of the bowl and into the cake tin. Place in oven and cook for about 45 to 50 mins. Check it's thoroughly cooked by poking right through the cake with a fork or tooth pick if it comes out clean it is done. Let the cake cool in the tin. Once it's cooled remove from the tin and place on a plate, slice and enjoy. You can add melted chocolate or nutella on top if desired but the cake tastes nice by itself .
