Introduction: Easy Hummus

About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make hummus. I love hummus, and this homemade hummus recipe is so easy to make. It is a popular dip or spread that originated in the Middle East and is found with the many Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Cuisine. It is made with cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans), tahini, lemon juice, salt, and olive oil. If I can do it, you can do it. Let's get started!

Don't forget to follow me and check out my other Instructables. :)

Follow the easy steps below or watch the video tutorial or do both! :)

Step 1: Ingredients and Tools

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup tahini (sesame seed paste or butter) (50g)
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil (15ml)
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. lemon juice (30 to 45ml)
  • 1 to 2 cloves of fresh minced garlic
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. of salt (4 to 6g)
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin (optional, a lot of people like to add it.) (2g)
  • 2 to 4 Tbsp. cold water (30 to 60ml)
  • 15 oz can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas) (425g)
  • Top with paprika and olive oil

Step 2: Blend the Tahini and Other Ingredients

In a food processor add the tahini, oil, salt, part of the garlic, half of the lemon juice, and half of the water. I only like to add half of some of those to start, you can always add the other half after tasting it. Pulse until well blended. Scrape the sides of the bowl when done.

Step 3: Garbanzo Beans (chickpeas)

Next, add in all of the garbanzo beans (chickpeas). If you would like the hummus to be extra smooth, you can remove the outer shell of all of the garbanzo beans. I don't normally do this, because it takes more time. Blend until most of them are broken down. Then scrape the sides. Blend again until smooth.

Step 4: Taste and Blend

Now give it a taste. Add the leftover lemon juice and garlic if desired. Add any extra water needed to make it more smooth or to get your desired thickness. Add extra salt as desired. Remember to scrape down the sides of the food processor bowl.

Step 5: Finish It Off and Enjoy

Now top it with a little bit of olive oil and a few shakes of paprika. Serve it with raw veggies and pita bread or use it however you like. Enjoy! :)
