This project is a super fun, easy, and cheap way to make an awesome sign that looks just like a neon sign. There are countless different words and shapes that you can make with this project. In the end, you will have a one of a kind decoration for your room that looks super cool!
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
You will need the following materials for this project:
- El Wire (I ordered mine from Amazon for about $8)
- Aluminum wire
- Thread (or super glue)
Step 2: Measurements
I decided that I wanted to hang my project in the space between my window and my ceiling. For this step, I measured how much space I would have and stuck tape to the table to use as a guideline.
Step 3: Make Your Design!
Now it is time to start bending the wire into any shape! I decided to go with the word "hey," but you can make any word or shape that you want. Just remember that cursive writing makes words much easier to make.
As I went along, I taped down the sections I had already finished to keep it from sliding around so much.
Tip: If you do not feel like bending the wire without any kind of guidelines, you can put down some paper and draw your design before you start.
Step 4: Tie Intersections
I used some thread to keep the wire from separating at the sections that crossed over. This will make the design more secure.
Step 5: Remove Tape
After removing the tape, keep bending the wire until it is in the exact position you want it in.
Step 6: Attach the El Wire
To attach the el wire I used thread and tied a knot every inch or two. Then I went back and cut off the extra strands. With this technique, I can reuse the el wire again just by cutting it off. A faster way to attach the wire is to super glue it on, but it will be stuck.
Step 7: Hang Your Finished Project!
I just used some push pins to hang this since it is super light.
It is fun to turn out all of the lights and step back to look at your project. It looks super awesome in the dark!
