Skill / Experience:

Sorry to embroidery beginners, this article is bit advanced.

  • If you embroider the given design attached on this article, you might have experience in machine embroidery before.
  • If you want to create your own design, you might have experience using

    PE-DESIGN 10 software before.

What you make:

  • This embroidery book consists of two parts, cover page and inner page.
  • 1) Digitize embroidery data on your PC. (Step 2- 11)
  • 2) Use the embroidery machine to realize book pages. (Step 12-19)

Embroidery order is very important but bit complicated in this article. Mind the following order before creating pattern data.

  1. Embroidery pattern on cover page
  2. Cutting window of cover page.
  3. Hemming & cutting outline of the cover page
  4. (change fabric here)
  5. Embroidery on inner page
  6. (put cover page on the inner page)
  7. Binding cover page and inner page
  8. Cutting outline of inner page
  9. Complete.

And also, you may mind that embroidery patterns of both cover page and inner page are on the same one embroidery data file. Your machine will embroider it as a series of work, you will suspend and change fabrics during the work to make this book.

So, Let’s start making !

  • Step1: Materials and tools

Design patterns using PE-DESIGN 10

  • Step2: Design software PE-DESIGN 10 pre-configuration.
  • Step3: Create a cutting line pattern (Inner page outline)
  • Step4: Create an embroidery pattern (Inner page)
  • Step5: Create an embroidery pattern (Cover page window)
  • Step6: Create other embroidery patterns (Cover page)
  • Step7: Create hemming patterns.(Outline, both page)
  • Step8: Create a book binding pattern
  • Step9: Create a cutting line pattern (Cover page)
  • Step10: Create a pattern for placement marks.
  • Step11: Verify the sewing order

Make actual work

  • Step12: Set an embroidery machine to cutwork mode.
  • Step13: Attach Cutwork needles to the embroidery machine.
  • Step14: Import the embroidery pattern file.
  • Step15: Hooping
  • Step16: Embroider the cover page.
  • Step17: Embroider the pattern of inner page.
  • Step18: Bind the cover page and inner page together.
  • Step19: Complete.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

  • An embroidery machine
    • If your embroidery machine has Cutwork function (Brother PR650, PR655, PR1000 series), we recommend using it. With Cutwork function, you can cut out a shape automatically by your embroidery machine and get better result.
    • But Cutwork is not mandatory. If you don’t have this feature, you can use scissors instead.
    • We use PR1000e embroidery machine with Cutwork function in this article.
  • Cutwork needle kit (When you use Cutwork function)
  • Embroidery design software, PE-DESIGN 10 (If you create your own design)
  • Windows PC

  • Two pieces of felt fabric
  • Embroidery threads
    • Colors are depend on your design.
    • Attached example requires 6 colors (Pink, Fresh pink, Light blue, Fresh green, White, Black)
  • Embroidery stabilizer.
  • Double-sided adhesive tape

Step 2: Design Software (PE-DESIGN 10) Pre-configuration

If you want to embroider given design attached on this article, you can skip Step 2-10, download .PES design file on Step 11, continue from Step 12.

Start your design:

First of all, let’s configure settings of PE-DESIGN 10 for using Cutwork function.

  • Launch [Layout & Editing] of PE-DESIGN 10.
  • Click [Design Settings] on Start menu.
  • Select a right icon in [Machine Type].
  • Select 7-1/8””x5-1/8””(180 x 130mm) in [Hoop Size] items and check [Rotate 90 Degrees].

Step 3: Create a Cutting Line Pattern (Inner Page Outline)

Let’s make a cutting line of book outline.

With Cutwork function:

Create rectangular outline with cut out setting.

  • Select [Home] tab -> [Shapes] -> [Rectangle]. This rectangle will be the outline of the book.
  • Select [Outline] tab -> [Line sew type] selector -> [Cutting].
    • By default, you may see [Zigzag Stitch] in Line sew type selector. Click this selector and change it to [Cutting]. You will use this Line sew type selector frequently in this work, so remember it.
    • Selecting [Cutting] here makes your embroidery machine to cut out the shape.
  • Select [Sewing Attributes] pane (right side of PE-DESIGN) -> Check [Leave uncut sections].
    • Without this check, the outline of book will be completely cut out, the fabric might be rolled up during the cutting process and end up getting unexpected cut.
  • Drug your mouse on Design page to create rectangle of the book outline.

Without Cutwork function:

If your embroidery machine does not have Cutwork function, please change [Line sew type] selector to [Running Stitch] and change thread color to "APPLIQUE MATERIAL". After machine embroidery, please cut out the shape by yourself using scissors.

We recommend using thread for the cutting line “APPLIQUE MATERIAL” that is closest to the color of the fabric.

Step 4: Create an Embroidery Pattern (Inner Page)

Create the embroidery pattern to be used for the inner page.

In attached PES example, “Rabbit” and “Egg” shapes are included. You can use this example or make your own.If you want to create original pattern, there are two way.

  • One way is importing patterns ([Home] tab -> [Import Patterns] -> [from Design Library]). You can use patterns by dragging them from the [Import] pane.
  • The other way is importing SVG file. ([Home] tab -> [Import Patterns]->[from Vector Image]). If you familiar with some vector drawing software (like Illustrator or Inkscape), this way is convenient.

Sewing Order adjustment:

Adjust sewing order on [Sewing Order] pane (Left side of PE-DESIGN). Drag embroidery patterns (the rabbit and the egg) to upper and cut out line to bottom. This adjustment is important because embroidery must be done before cutting.

Step 5: Create an Embroidery Pattern (Cover Page Window)

Create an embroidery pattern of a window.

  • First, create window shape using [Home] tab -> [Shape].
  • In this example, we use an egg shell shape using [Closed Straight Line] tool. You can make any shape you like.
  • This shape should have following setting :
    • [Line sew type] selector : [Zigzag Stitch]
    • [Region sew type] selector : [Not Sewn (Region)]
  • It looks like the window more if you change [Sewing Attributes] settings ([Zigzag width] to 0.12” (3.0 mm) in [Line sew]).
  • Drug your mouse on the Design page and adjust the position and size exactly you want.
    • In this example, we place the egg shell style window where the rabbit face like looking inside from it.

Window pattern with Cutwork function:

Set the window shape to cut out.

  • Click [Home] tab -> [Cutwork Wizard].
  • Open [Cutwork Wizard] dialog and then specify the following settings. And click [OK].
    • Stabilize Cut Edge: No
    • Cutting Line: Cutting
      • Secure Water-Soluble Stabilizer: No
      • Net Fill: No
      • Covering Satin Stitch: Yes
        • Width :0.12 inch(3.0 mm)
        • Density :139 line/inch(5.5 line/mm)
    • With [Covering Stain Stitch] setting above, the window shape will be cut out and window frame will be sewn as zigzag stitch.

    Window pattern without Cutwork function:

If your machine does not have Cutwork feature, please change [Cutting Line] to [Running Stitch] and cut out the shape with scissors after embroidery.

    Sewing Order adjustment:

Adjust sewing order as previous steps. In [Sewing Order] pane, drag this window shape to top. (Window shape will be sewn before the patterns on inner page)

Step 6: Create Other Embroidery Patterns (Cover Page)

Let’s create other parts of embroidery patterns. (In this example, bottom half of egg shell)

    Embroidery shape and texts:

    • Creating embroidery pattern is same as described in Step 4.
    • Input your favorite message. Click [Home] tab -> [Text] -> the left menu (“A” icon).
      • In this example, we use “Block04” font and input the message as “HappyEaster”.
    • Click and drag the green diamond (near “E” in sample image) to adjust spacing between the characters.

    Sewing Order adjustment:

    • On [Sewing Order] pane, select the embroidery pattern created at this step, and click [Optimize Sewing Order]. Then the order is optimized automatically.
      • Note : Select ONLY patterns created this step. Do NOT select patterns on inner page or window shape in optimizing order.
    • After optimize, drag the patterns created in this step to top. This means, patterns on cover page (created in this step) will be embroidered before the window cutting. Without cut out window, your machine can embroider the fabric in a stable condition, you can get better embellishment.

Step 7: Create Hemming Patterns.(Outline, Both Page)

Let’s create hemming embroidery pattern of book’s outline.

    Create Zigzag stitch on border:

    • Select [Home] tab -> [Shapes] -> [Open Straight Line].
    • Select sewing settings as follows:
      • [Line Sew Type] selector : [Zigzag Stitch].
      • Sewing Attributes pane
        • Line color : white (You can select any color you like.)
        • [Zigzag width] : 0.08 inch (2.0 mm)
        • [Density] : 127 line/inch (5.0 line/mm)
        • [Under sewing] : checked
    • Draw lines on top, right, bottom border of book. Keep this zigzag stitch inside the cutting line of the book outline created in Step 3. If you make it protrude, this zigzag stitch might be cut away.
    • Make small margin between this zigzag stitch and the cutting line. Recommended margin is shown in image. (0.008 inch (0.2 mm) for top and bottom, 0.012 inch (0.3 mm) for right, 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) for left)

Duplicate hemming pattern for other page:

Select the created Zigzag Stitch pattern and click "Copy" and "Paste" on the [Home] tab in order to duplicate it. One of the zigzag stitches is for cover page, and the other is for the inner page.

    Sewing Order adjustment:

    • Select one of the created zigzag stitch, drag it on the [Sewing Order] pane. Place it between window frame and patterns of inner page created at Step4. This is for cover page.
    • Likewise, change the other one’s sewing order. Place it between patterns of inner page and cutting line made at Step 3. This will be hemming of inner page.

Step 8: Create a Book Binding Pattern

This section explains how to create embroidery pattern for binding book. (binding cover page and inner page together)

To bind pages, you use zigzag stitch line on the left edge of book. Create a line as the following instructions.

    • Select [Home] tab -> [Shapes] -> [Open Straight Line].
    • Change setting as follow:
      • [Attributes] tab -> [Line Sew Type] selector : [Zigzag Stitch]
      • [Zigzag width] : 0.16 inch (4.0 mm)
      • [Density] : 140 line/inch(5.5 line/mm)
      • [Under sewing] : checked
    • Draw a straight line from left-top corner to left-bottom corner of book. Be careful not to protrude from the cut pattern of "Book outline" created in Step 3.
    • If you make it protrude, the embroidered part may be cut away, so make sure not to protrude.
    • Make margin between zigzag and cutting line shown in image.
      • 0.008 inch (0.2 mm) from the left side cutting line
      • 0.016 inch (0.4 mm) from both the top cutting line and bottom line.

    Sewing Order adjustment:

On the [Sewing Order] pane, drag this binding zigzag to just above the "Book shape" cutting line created in Step 3. (place this zigzag second from the bottom)

    Change Color Thread:

The line color is set to "APPLIQUE" in [Color] pane.

"APPLIQUE" color makes the embroidery machine suspended before sewing this binding zigzag stitch.

Step 9: Create a Cutting Line Pattern (Cover Page)

Duplicate the cutting line of inner page outline created in Step 3 with copy and paste method. Then shift the duplicated line so that the cover page is little bit smaller than inner page.

    • Click [Home] tab -> [Select] menu -> [Select Point].
    • Shift the place of the point so that the width of duplicated cutting line is shorter than the original one.
      • In this example, click and select the two points on the right side of the cutting line, and shift the point position so that it takes 0.004 inch (0.1 mm) margin on the right side.
      • Similarly, on the left side, click on the two points on the left side of the cutting line to select it, and shift the point position so as to take the left 0.04 inch (1.0 mm) margin. This cutting line will be used for a cover page outline. Reduce the size slightly to make the looks better when overlapping the page under a page.

    Sewing Order adjustment:

Drag on the [Sewing Order] pane, place this cutting line between hemming of cover page and patterns on inner page.

When you select an object on [Sewing Order] pane, the region of the object is represented by a red dashed line on the Design page. Make sure you select shifted smaller one.

Step 10: Create a Pattern for Placement Marks.

To layout the cover page over the inner page accurately, make placement mark.

    • Go to [Home] tab, click [Shapes] & select [Rectangle].
    • Change attribute with [Outline]tab. (Line sew type be [Running Stitch], Region sew type be [Not Sewn (Region)])
    • Choose the same pink color as selected at Step.8.
      • (You may see red line in our explanation for increased visibility)
    • Make sure to draw rectangle to fit within the Zigzag Stitch pattern created at Step.8 & cutting line pattern at Step 9. We would suggest to offset by 0.14inch (0.3mm) from the left cutting line, and 0.28inch (0.7mm) from the right Zigzag Stitch pattern & from the bottom & top of cutting line.
      • If the rectangle size made bigger than them, needle or blade may touch adhesive tape & may damage the project or the machine itself

Duplicate rectangle and Sewing order adjustment:

    • Copy the rectangle shape pattern.
      • One is for cover page, the other for inner page.
    • Select one of the rectangle and change the sewing order between hemming of cover page (Step 7) and cutting line of cover page outline (Step 9). This rectangle is for cover page.
    • Change the sewing order of the other rectangle, just above the binding zigzag stitch at Step.8.
      • This rectangle pattern will be used as placement mark for the inner page. Be sure to sew this marking before the inner page being cut off the fabric.

Step 11: Verify the Sewing Order

Now, you have created all embroidery patterns. Before going actual machine work, verify the sewing order. The order should be following.

    1. Embroidery patterns of cover page
    2. Cutting line of cover page window
    3. Hemming of cover page outline
    4. Placement mark of cover page
    5. Cutting line of cover page outline
    6. Embroidery patterns of inner page
    7. Hemming of inner page outline
    8. Placement mark of inner page
    9. Binding zigzag stitch
    10. Cutting line of inner page outline

Step 12: Set an Embroidery Machine to Cutwork Mode.

(If you don’t have Cutwork function, skip this section)

First of all, set up the embroidery machine in order to use the Cutwork function.

    • Turn on the embroidery machine.
    • Touch the "Setting" key at the bottom of the touch panel to open the setting screen.
    • Open the fifth page of the setting screen and touch "ON" in the "Cutwork" column.
      • Note: Cutwork Kit "PRCW 1" will be required if there is no "Cutwork" column on the setting screen page 5
    • Touch [OK] button if a message “To turn the Cutwork mode ON press OK.” is shown.
    • Once turn the machine off and on if a message of “Turn the machine power OFF………………” is shown.
    • After turning on the power again, when the message "Check to make sure Cutwork ..." is displayed, it is successfully transferred to Cutwork mode.

Step 13: Attach Cutwork Needles to the Embroidery Machine.

(If you don’t have Cutwork function, skip this section)

    • Replace the four default needles to Cutwork needles at the right side.
    • The Cutwork needles are labeled B1 to B4, and they should be attached to B1 (light blue) to No. 1, B2 (purple) to No. 2, B3 (green) to No. 3 and B4 (orange) to No. 4.
    • Loose the screw holding the needle and remove the needle.
    • Attach the Cutwork needle, and tighten the screw.
    • Change 2 to 4 in the same way.
    • Make sure the number and the needle position in order to cut cleanly and securely.

Step 14: Import the Embroidery Pattern File.

    • Insert your USB memory containing embroidery pattern into the slot on the right side of the operation panel. (In case of PR-1000e)
    • Touch the "USB" key on the screen.
    • Select the embroidery pattern and touch "SET".

    Step 15: Hooping

    • Put the fabric over the hoop of 7-1 / 8" x 5 - 1/8" (180 x 130 mm). Stretch enough until it is fully tensioned. In this step, you hoop the fabric for the cover page.
    • Stretching a fabric to the hoop is very important. If the fabric is loose, the embroidery result would not be great. Please pay attention to this step.
    • Select the hoop size according to the size of the embroidery pattern.

Step 16: Embroider the Cover Page.

    • Attach the hoop to the embroidery machine.
    • Touch "EDIT END" on the screen and touch “SEWING" next.
    • After toughing "LOCK", the “start / stop button” will blink green color, then press the button to start embroidering.
      • If you need thread change at this time, replace it.
    • It will start making embroidery and cutting cover page window. After the cut operation is completed, the machine will be suspended.
      • If your machine does not have the Cutwork function, please cut out the window (the upper half of the egg) with scissors.
    • Detach the hoop from machine, but keep the fabric on the hoop. Remove the window (upper half of egg)
      • If you do not remove the cut part, it will be sewn together. Be sure to remove it. As an important note, do not remove the fabric from the hoop now.
      • After removing window, we recommend to place water soluble stabilizer over the window hole. It prevents deformation of the fabric around window shape. Put adhesive tape on the water soluble stabilizer, stick it to fabric as shown in the attached image.
    • Attach the hoop to the embroidery machine again, restart it. The edge of the window is sewn, and the outline of cover page is cut.
      • If your machine does not have the Cutwork function, please cut the outline of cover page with scissors (Outline is sewn as the “APPLIQUE MATERIAL”)
    • After cutting, detach hoop from the embroidery and take out the cover page, and remove the stabilizer left on the fabric.
    • Note: Stabilizers are removed in some images for tuitional purpose.

    Without Cutwork function

Step 17: Embroider the Pattern of Inner Page.

    • In order to embroider the inner page, put another fabric on the hoop and attach it to the embroidery machine.
    • When you start, pattern, hemming, placement mark for the inner page will be embroidered.
    • After embroider the placement mark, the machine will be suspended again. Then detach the hoop from machine but NEVER remove the fabric from the hoop.

Step 18: Bind the Cover Page and Inner Page Together.

    • Put double-sided adhesive tape on the back side of the cover page.
      • Attached image shows where the tape should be put.
      • Placement of long narrow tape shown in the image is important.
        • Referencing the placement mark, place the adhesive tape exactly inside the rectangle mark.
        • If it protrudes from the mark, the needle will drop on the adhesive tape, it might poison inside your embroidery machine. So place it carefully.
    • Stick the cover page over the inner page
    • Attach the hoop to the machine again.
    • On the touch panel, select the thread color for "APPLIQUE". You can select your favorite color. (We used light ping in this example)
    • Restart embroidery. Both pages will be bind together and outline of the inner page will be cut.

    Step 19: Complete.

    • Detach the hoop from your embroidery machine
    • Peel the adhesive tape and cut the extra threads.

Congratulations! You have completed all the steps.

    Step 20: Reference URLs.
