Introduction: Evil Dead Scary LED Lamp Build With Gearbox Designs

About: My name is David and I make things... geeky things. I enjoy punk music, woodworking, graphic design, and screen printing. @gearboxdesigns (Instagram & Facebook)

In this Instructable, I will show you how I made this rad LED lightbox featuring my favorite character from my favorite movie: Henrietta from Evil Dead 2. If you are on a mobile device and would like to see the video, here's an alternate link.

Its a pretty straight forward build. The tools I used are:

Vinyl Cutter

Table Saw

Miter Saw

Brad Nail gun

Pin Nail Gun

Materials

5' reclaimed oak flooring

4" x 12" x 1/8" acrylic sheet

Minwax Ebony Stain

Craftstore Chain jewelry

Step 1: Preparing / Adding Vinyl Decal to Acrylic Sheet

This is a graphic I designed and cut on the vinyl cutter.

Cleaning the acrylic is essential for a clean adhesion. Use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle for the best results.

Step 2: Wood Time!

I used 2 - 2.5" x.75" oak flooring. I sliced 1 into two equal halves. The thin pieces will be used to the parts of the lid and the back. I ripped one piece down into 3 non-equal sections (for the little floor boards) and planed them down to thee different thicknesses (1/4" 5/16" and 3/8"). This will give the floor a random, old fruit cellar lid feel.

I planed down the other half just enough to smooth out the board and cut it in to two pieces. One for the back of the box and the other for the base of the lid. I ripped a 1/8" deep groove 3/16" wide 1/2" from one edge for the acrylic.

The second full board has a blade width groove 1/2" away from one side. This is to accept the acrylic sheet in the base.

Step 3: More Wood Time!

Cut those small rippers down to length. Don't make them less than the width of your lid base but make the sizes random. (This will make it look cool). I then used super glue and tiny pin nails to fasten them to the lid base.

Now its time to make the side and bottom base. Use your grooved board from earlier and cut a length that you like. Then, line up another piece and mark the angle of the lid. Cut two of those for the sides

Step 4: Now That the Power Tools Are Mostly Finished......

Step 5: Take a Break! You Deserve It!

Enjoy a tasty beverage and a quesadilla. It will be worth it.

Step 6: Decorations!

I used a V-chisel and V-file to make the floor looked cracked and split. Go crazy!

Next, I used Ebony flavored Minwax stain. Wipe on, wipe off.

Step 7: Add LEDs and Stuff!

I added an LED strip to the lid through a little notch in the back.

Then, i wrapped the inside with green vinyl, but painting would work as well.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Hard Work.
