I wanted more range from my NodeMCUs, so i came up with this mod.
- SMA female PCB connector
- 2.4GHz WiFi antenna with SMA male connector
- Appropriate 50Ω coax for microwave frequencies, don't use random TV coax.
- ESP8266 obviously
- Cutting tools
- (Optional) Small heatsinks, because the ESP8266 gets really hot and i think it reduces its lifespan and performance.
(If you want you can use RP-SMA instead of normal SMA for the connectors and antennas)
I bought everything from AliExpress, it's the best price.
Step 1: Cut the PCB Trace
Cut where you see the red rectangles. Use a multimeter to make sure there is no more connection.
Step 2: Solder Coax and Connector
Cut the coax to appropriate length and expose the center conductor and shield.
Solder center conductor to orange (look at the pic)
Solder shield to blue (ground)
Then solder the other ends to the SMA/RP-SMA PCB connector that you chose.
Step 3: Done
You can use hot glue to make sure the coax doesn't move.
Also you can apply the heatsink now if you have some.
You have increased the range of your ESP8266, congratulations. I did a test and the NodeMCUs now reach a room in my house that they couldn't dream of reaching before. You can now deauth even more people lol ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
