Introduction: Flowerpot Kamado BBQ

About: Hello my name is Bob and I like to make things. www.youtube.com/bobbee

In this Instructable I show you how I made a Kamado style BBQ out of flowerpots.

For this project I used:

  • 1 top flower pot to function as a lid
  • 1 bottom flower pot as a base
  • 1 inner flower pot to put the charcoal.
  • a thermometer
  • a gasket
  • a hinge
  • scrap metal for vents
  • scrap metal for metal rings
  • heat proof paint

Some basic tools, like power drill.
I weld the metal rings but you can also screw them together.

Step 1: Check Out My Video!

I hope this video will help you create a flowerpot BBQ, or at least give you some inspiration for your own project. Along with the video I show you in the steps below how I dit it :-)

Step 2: Make Some Pits

I start to make some pits in the pot to make it look more like a bbq instead of a flowerpot ;-)

Step 3: Venting Holes

Then I create the venting holes. So later on it's easy to control the charcoal.

I make 2 circles out of scrap metal and place them over each other.
This way we can open or close the vent.

Then 1 drill holes in the flowerpot itself and install the metal vent.

Step 4: Bottom Vent

For the bottom I make a sliding plate to function as a vent control.

Step 5: Frame

Now it's time to make the frame, so we can connect the top and bottom pot together with the hinge.
I bend the metal strips around the pots and weld them together.

Also I make a wooden handle for the top lid, so it's easy to open it later on while hot.

In this step you can also just screw the circles together. If you don't have a welder.

Step 6: Paint

With some heat proof paint, I paint the parts. Now it really starts to look like a Kamado.

Step 7: Assemble

Now the only thing left is to assemble the BBQ
Careful to not tighten the bolds too much, otherwise the pot will crack
(I had a small crack, it was easy to fix with some paint and dust from the terracotta drilling mixed together)

Also I attach the heat proof gasket, the thermometer and I put the inner pot with the mesh inside the pot.

Step 8: Time to BBQ

After the hard work now it's time to enjoy.
