Introduction: Convertible Study Cum Dining Table

About: I love to create new things which makes the life easy.

Hi,

I made this project just to help other students living in the dorm room, As i live as a PG in a house where we can not construct anything which we want.

In my PG i do not have any study table and dining table, whenever my friends come for a party or a group study, They all went on my bed ,chair ,floor :) etc.

I want to make something which is suitable and convenient for me and as well as for my friends, so i decided to make Foldable study cum dinning table.

According to my idea it should use the least space of my room and it should get converted into a dinning table for 8 people easily.

To make this project we just need some creative skills , tools and adhesives.

So we will make our table as interesting as we can, so let's get started and build something great.

Step 1: EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

To make the table we need these equipments.

TOOLS

1) Drilling machine

2) Jigsaw cutter

3) Screw drivers

4) Inch tape

5) Solid work's software to find the real dimensions of the project.

MATERIAL REQUIRED

1) MDF board

2) Screw

3) L Angles

4) Vinyl Sheet / Paint 500 ml

5) Glue or Adhesive

6) Channels for sliding

7) 4 pcs magnetic latch

8) Thinner 50 ml

Step 2: Designing

Designing is the important part before creating any wire frame or model for the project.

I have designed this table in solid works according to my required dimensions.

As i have less space in my dorm room so i have kept the size of study table really compact , Which is :

Height : 30 Inches

Width : 32 Inches

Depth : 16 Inches

I have attached some images of solid works so that i can get an idea of the finished product to look like.

It's a convertible table which can get converted into a dinning table from study table.

Dimensions of dinning table

Height : 30 Inches

Width : 32 Inches

Depth : 44 inches

So we have increased the depth of table by 28 inches , it can be understood by the drawing images attached.

We have just used the channels to expand the depth of table, its really amazing and fits gud in my dorm room.

We will increase the depth of the table by using channels and will attached the channels from both the sides of table, the middle portion which will remain empty will be covered by the extra board which we will hang in front of the table.

Step 3: Cutting the Appropriate Size From the Board

We will start constructing the table from the base, so first we will cut down the required pieces according to the dimensions as given below.

8 inch x 30 inch = 4 pcs ( Legs of the table)

8 Inch x 30 Inch = 2 Pcs ( Top of the table)

8 Inches x 29 Inches = 2pcs ( Below the top piece)

2.5 Inches x 26 inches = 8 pcs ( table leg supporters)

14 inch x 30 inch = 2Pcs ( Will come to use when we will extend the table)

2 Inch x 14 inch = 6 pcs

2 inches X 29 inch = 2 pcs

That's it by cutting these pieces our most of the work is done, now we have to just assemble all the things according to our drawing.

In starting i have added whole project video which will help us to understand our project in a deeper way so i recommend all of you to please go ahead and watch it.

It is really important to cut the pieces in a symmetrical way otherwise our table will not be steady and comfortable.

Step 4: Assembly Begins

Now we will start assembling the board pieces which we have cut down in last step.

According to my idea i have to construct a two tables of 8 inch depth 32 inch width and 30 inch height

So that they can get separated while we are extending it.

So we will take 2 pieces of 8 inches x 30 inches board pieced and join it with a 8 inch x 32 inch piece from the corners.

Note the top part should overlap the vertical legs so that we get a clear top surface.

Apply adhesive at the corner which we want to join with the other part and lock it with the nails of 1 inch having top.

After that we will measure the width of the channel we have and leave that much space from the top of the table surface and fix other 8 inch x 29 inch piece which will make a private cabinet for the channel and stabilize the table from shaking itself.

Note: Do Not forget to put adhesive on the surface which we want to fix permanently.

After our table looks like A its the time to add supporters of size 2.5 inch x 26 inch on the corners with the board piece of 8 inch x 30 inch .

I have used 1 inch top nails to fix all the parts with adhesives, once our structure is ready we will make one more similar table so that our study table is ready

Step 5: Fixing Channels

In this step we will start fixing the channels into the table so we have to take 2 inch x 14 inch board piece 6 in quantity.

first we have to fix 1 channel on 1 piece of 2 inch x 14 inch board piece with the help of screw (8mm) and repeat the same for 4qty .

once it is done we have to start fixing the channels in the cavity of 2 inches and fix it with the nails or screws.( Don't forget to put adhesive in between).

Step 6: Adding Channels in a Consecutive Way

After fixing the channels in both the parts of the table, now is the time to join the table by adding one more extra part of 2 inch x 14 inch board and fixing it in between the end part of the channels coming from the end part of the table.

It can be easily understood by the images attached.

As we know the primary part of the channel is detachable so we will take out the detachable part from the opposite side of the table part and fix it on to the board of 2 inch x 14 inch piece in the similar way we have taken it out.

Note: fix the channel in the better and clear way so that the small screw will not create any hindrance in the movement of the channels.

Step 7: Covering the Channels

After fixing the channels from inside we can see the vacant space, so to enclose it we will use a board piece of

2 inch x 29 inch and fix it with glue and nails.

we have to fix the enclosure in such a way that it will present the smooth surface because when we will paint it or cover it with vinyl so it will look awesome.

After finishing it will look similar to the last image.

Step 8: Attaching the Magnetic Latch

Till now our table have taken a shape of a study table but when we extend it there is nothing in between, so to cover that portion we will take two board pieces of 14 inch x 30 inch and keep these pieces on the channels.

Here you go for the dinning table. Hope u like it

Now we will attach the magnetic latch to the table so that it can attach the extra 14 inch x 30 inch pieces with it.

This is the easy process, in this process we just need to keep the board panel in a horizontal way attached to the base of the table and mark the position for the magnetic latch on the L portion of the table as we can see from the image.

similarly we will keep the second panel on the top of the first one and do the same process. it;s that much easy.

we will attach the bigger magnetic portion with the table and the iron plate with the board panel.

now your table will look like mine as in the images.

Step 9: Screwing L Angle With the Board

when we convert the study table to dinning table than there is a chance of slipping of the wooden panels that we have placed in between so to overcome this we will screw some L Angles so that slipping of the board panel can be prevented.

Just we need to put the panels in to an appropriate position and mark the line close to channel,

the channels passing from the end side of the table will allow the wooden panel to get attached from the outside as shown in the image but on the other side the channels gets inward so we need to screw the L Angle from inside of channel boundary.

keep in mind that we have to attach these panels on the front side of the table so where ever we screw the angle it should not create hindrance while attaching it to the front side of the table.

Step 10: Finishing the Surface

Now we are ready with our table , just we need to make it beautiful with the colors.

Before coloring we will insert the nails from the surface to deepen a little bit into the wood, which will leave the surface free from unwanted design.

now we will make a mixture of adhesive and wood particles left while cutting the board, and will use that mixture to fill the cavity or gaps in the table.

Once we are done with the cavity filling we will rub the whole surface of the table with a 60 number sandpaper after 6 hours.

so finally we will get the better finished surface which we can color or cover it with vinyl.

Step 11: Covering the Surface With the Primer and Paint

When we are done with the total surface finish, now is the time to cover it with primer.

We can also use the coat of shellac to make the surface extra smooth. Spackle can also be used to fill some areas which has some uncertainty or holes.

Primer : it helps the surface to get the better finish and also develop the surface for a good adhesion of the paint, Thats why it is really important to put a layer of primer.

For this table i preferred it to be of white color so i am using the white color for painting.

Once our table is covered with the single coat of primer and it is left for 8 hours to dry.

after 8 hours we will take the white color can of 500 ml and add 50 ml of thinner in it as it will dilute the color and make the brush easy to run on surface.

If u have the compressor than add 250 ml thinner in the paint can of 500 ml.

so we have the idea of concentration , now we have to start our painting, just by keeping the hands soft on the surface.

Step 12: FINAL TOUCH UPS

Finally when we are done with the painting part , we only have to do some touch ups which we can see from our eyes and we have to remove paint from the metal clips which are screwed to the top part of table.

Now we are done with our table, this is the time to call your friends and surprise them with the amazing project and have fun.
