## Step 1: Folding Stool

## Step 2: Problem

The problem is that carrying a chair over a long distance gets to be quite a problem because usually, stools are heavy; they don’t support a lot of weight and are especially awkward to carry! It has become so much of a problem that I’ve even been forced to leave my stool behind and just sit on the sand/rocks/grass or ground which is usually not very comfortable and makes my clothes dirty. Brief: I want to create a folding stool that I can carry over a long distance without it being a problem. This stool will fold up to an extremely easy to carry shape that won’t weigh a lot and will be able to support a lot of weight time after time.

A: The stool needs to support a minimum of 230lbs

A: The stool will fold meaning it will be portable.

A: The stool will fit easily into any car because of its compact design.

A: The stool will be made of wood and metal screws.

A: The stool will rotate on a series of wooden dowels

Q: What will be used to fascine the parts together?

A: The stool will be held together by dowels, glue, and screws

Q: How many people will the stool support at once?

A: The stool will hold one person at a time.

Q: How tall should the stool be?

A: 15 inches.

Q: How durable will the stool be?

A: The stool will be able to withstand quite a beating without it being damaged. -3-

Q: How heavy will the stool weigh?

A: The stool will not weigh over 3 lbs

Q: What type of wood will the stool be made out of?

A: Wood.

A: The dowel is like a handle that you can carry the stool by.

A: Yes

## Step 4: ​Solution

## Step 7: ​Fabrication

Run the 12’*6” piece of wood through the planer to shave down 3mm on each side.

Sketch out your designs on a piece the wooden plank using a meter stick, tape measure, pencil, and square.

Cut your first 4 long ripping cuts on the table saw.

Use the miter saw to cut your rectangular pieces down to their desired measurements.

Mark out all of your rounded ends on your first and second pieces.

Sand your rounded ends on your first and second pieces using the circular and belt sander.

Mark out off all of your drill holes on your first and second pieces using precision measurement tools.

Drill all of the marked holes using the drill press.

Mark off all of your angled leg end cuts on the first and second pieces.

Tape all of the #1’s together along the cut line of the angled leg end cuts.

Use the mitre saw to make the angled leg end cuts on the #1’s.

Tape all of the #2’s together along the cut line of the angled leg end cuts.

Use the mitre saw to make the angled leg end cuts on the #2’s

Plain all your wood to the same thickness.

Sand down all of your pieces using the portable sander until the wood is smooth.

Use the angle bracket to align your wood for assembly.

Glue and nail down your 1st and 2nd assembly into place.

Mark the length of dowel one would need for each dowel rotator slot.

Cut the dowel lengths on the band saw

Sand down the dowels and dowel slots (holes) until they fit snugly into position.

Insert the dowels.

Glue and nail piece 3’s.

Wood-fill all holes, dents and imperfections. Sand the entire stool until smooth.

Brush and blow off any wood dust still sitting on the surface of the wood.

Lightly damp your wood to bring up the grain.

Wait for the wood to dry a little bit and then sand your project until the surface is smooth.

Brush and blow off any wood dust still sitting on the surface of the wood.

Apply the first coat of stain to your wood.

Sit and let dry.

Lightly sand any imperfections in the first coat of stain.

Apply the second coat of stain to your wood.

Sit and let dry.

Paint a nice varnish finish to your wood.

Sit and enjoy.

## Step 8: ​Evaluation

1. The first flaw in my design is the fact that I sanded the dowels a bit too much so as a result, the dowels move too freely.

2. The second flaw in my design is that I was not very careful with the stool and so as a result, the wooden stool has some slight bumps and indentations.

3. The third flaw in my design is that I did not properly sand off all of the pencil marks within the pieces interior sides. This was a careless mistake and I’m very ashamed of myself.

4. The fourth and final flaw in my design is that I nailed the second assembly into the wrong position and to fix it I had to pull out the nails, fill in the holes and re-nail the pieces into their proper positions. This mistake left imperfections in the staining due to the different color that the wood filler stains compared to the surrounding wood.
