Introduction: Full Generator Testing Before Wind Turbine Installation:

About: Its all about life hacks, tools, scientific & creativity instructables ~ electron7m

Hi!

In this instructable you will be taught the simplest way to complete full testing of your generator for wind turbine installation.

The generator I am using here is a 360 watts geared brushless permanent magnet generator 3- phase.

Its a 24V 15 ampere generator.

Step 1: Open Circuit Voltage Test:

In this step I'm going to perform the open circuit voltage test by rotating the shaft of the generator with my hand. The generator produces 24 volts AC at an RPM of 180 so it will produce 12 volts and RPM of 90.

You can see in the picture that the generated voltage is of 12.52 volts so the RPM generated by my hand should be somewhere around 90 to 95.

I have used a handmade three phase bridge rectifier that is converting the generated three phase AC into DC.

I am using a multimeter to measure the output voltage.

Step 2: Short Circuit Current Measurement:

The multimeter in this step is connected in the current measurement mode.Just just connect the output three phase rectifier wire wires with the terminals of the multimeter and start rotating the generator shaft.

The digits displayed on the LCD screen of the multimeter will indicate the current generated by the mechanical input source.

So the full load hand generator power will be: 12.52 x 4.05 = 50.706W

Step 3: Step-up Voltage Testing:

In the step you will have to remove the three phase rectifier because here you are directly going to connect two of the three terminals of the generator to two of the three terminals of the transformer as shown in the picture. Usually there only two terminals at the output port of the transformer.

Now take a multimeter and move the pointer towards 750 AC voltage mode.Connect the terminals of the multimeter to the two output terminals of the transformer.

Now start rotating the shaft of the generator and measure the voltage reflected on the display screen of the multimeter.

Step 4: Load Test 1:

In the step replace the multimeter with an actual load bulb. The load bulb can be of any type.It can be an LED bulb or an incandescent bulb or a CFL.

Start rotating the shaft of the generator as fast as you can and you should see the bulb glow brightly.

Step 5: DC Load Test:

Remove the load bulb and the Transformer that you used in the previous step and replace it with a three phase bridge rectifier and 12 volt motor bike bulb.

Rotate the shaft of the generator same as in the previous step and you should see it glow.

So this was all about the full AC DC testing of a three phase generator.

Thank you for your time!
