Here is how to transform that beat up old guitar into a nice decorative planter for your home. Personally I found an old and broken guitar in the park behind my house (that place is a gold mine). Please don't waste a working instrument on this though.
You will need:
- An Old Guitar
- Spray Paint
- Mesh Bag
- Potting Soil
Step 1: PREPPING THE GUITAR
Start by cleaning and taking the guitar apart.
Make sure to keep the screws organized if you're not familiar with a guitar's anatomy.
Take away the back of the guitar. Mine was already cracked and partly detached so it just slipped a knife all around and it came right off. If not just use a saw.
Tape up any bits that you couldn't take off but don't want painted.
Step 2: PAINTING
Sand down all the surfaces. You don't need to get all the varnish off, but making the surface a little rougher will help the paint take better. Before painting make sure the dust has been wiped off.
Spray thin layers of paint on the surface. Let dry properly.
When it is completely dry, build it back up. This is where keeping your screws organized helps.
Step 3: PLANTING
First I drilled some holes in the wooden piece under the hole.
Using solid string fix the mesh bag to the guitar by passing string through the holes in the wood.
Fill the bag with potting soil. Press the bag to keep the shape, you don't want it to be thicker than the guitar. Compress the soil in the bag.
Plant your plants in the bag and guide them through the hole. As they grow keep on guiding them so they grow in the right direction.
Step 4: HANG IT UP
There are many ways of hanging it up. The easiest is to get a guitar hanger.
Its also nice just leaning against the wall.
Hope you enjoy your decorative guitar planter!
