Introduction: Harry Potter Quidditch Mini Brooms

About: Love DIY-ing. Esp converting and revamping old stuff to something completely new and awesome :)

I love the Harry Potter world ad I decided to make some Potter tree ornaments for christmas. I decided to make some Quidditch broomsticks to start off.

Step 1: Gathering Your Materials.

  1. You can make your own broom sticks or purchase them form any craft store. I made 2 but because of time constraints, I purchased a pack from Michael's. You can find the exact product here: Michael's Mini Broomsticks
  2. To make your own:
    • Collect thin branches / twigs from your yard.
    • Cut the branches to about half of your finger length and trim them to make them skinny (Please take care when doing this step).
    • Collect wood dowels or chopsticks to create the handle of the broom
    • Cut the dowel to the length of your finger; if required trim the thickness down.
    • Use light colored cord to tie the bristles to one end of the dowel. Make sure the bristles are securely attached to the stick.
  3. Acrylic Paints: Craft Smart – Brick Red; Craft Smart – King’s Gold; Apple Barrel – Black; Craft Smart – Dark Grey; Craft Smart – Espresso; FolkArt – Terracotta

  4. Washi Tape – Silver, Gold

  5. Mod Podge – Matte

Step 2: Designing Your Broom: Nimbus 2000

I decided to make a Nimbus 2000 first. For this, you will need the brick red, king’s gold paints and the gold washi tape.

  1. Paint the entire broom with the brick red and let dry for 30 mins. Add 1 more coat of paint and let dry.
  2. Use the back end of a fine tipped brush to gently write out Nimbus 2000 on the handle of the broom. (Does not have to be exact letters, just a hint of the word is enough).
  3. Let everything dry for 30 mins.
  4. Cut out a small section of the gold washi tape and cut into small, thin strips. Wrap the tape 2-3 times around the middle of the broom (where the stick meets the bristles).
  5. I used matte mod podge over the tape to further secure it (this step is optional).

Step 3: Designing Your Broom: Firebolt

The Firebolt involves a little more paint work. You will need the Espresso, Dark Grey, Terracotta paints and the silver washi tape.

  1. First, paint the bristles with the Espresso paint.
  2. After drying, paint the portion of the broom attached to the bristles the Dark Grey until the middle of the broom.
  3. After drying, paint the end of the broom with Terracotta until it blends with the grey.
  4. Cut out a small section of the silver washi tape and cut into small, thin strips. Wrap the tape 2-3 times around the middle of the broom (where the stick meets the bristles).
  5. I used matte mod podge over the tape to further secure it (this step is optional).

Step 4: Designing Your Broom: BlueBottle

The blue bottle was the easiest. Just paint the broom black and add some silver paint (optional) to the point where the bristles meet the broom.

The remaining 2 brooms, I painted with metallic red and gold paints with some black and blue trim.

I finally attached some cord to the middle of the brooms to hang as ornaments on my christmas tree :)
