Headphone Modification

About: I'm a student, studying Engineering. I'm learning electronics, robotics, wood working and science in general. I enjoy hacking and disassembling as much as designing...I love Travelling, Hiking and cycling.

No time to Untangle your headphone wire, or broke your headphone cable and had to buy a new pair of headphones. But not any more.
Now turn your boring wired headphones to a removable wire, So next time you break your wire you don't need to buy a new headphones nor waste your time repairing it. Just buy a New AUX cable.

Step 1: TOOLS

I have used Skullcandy hesh 1 for this project, you can use any headphones.

Soldering Iron
super glue or hot melt

A nice pair of headphones ( I have used Skullcandy hesh 1 With enough space to insert a 3.5 mm jack inside)
OR a broken headphones were wires are pulled out due to accidents.
Spare headphone jack
AUX cable with both side 3.5 mm jack ( In this project I have made my own aux cable with the same wire of headphone but u can buy a cable).

Step 2: Get You Parts Ready

Get your parts and make sure they work
I got a female 3.5 mm jack from a old broken mp4 but you can even buy from store , they are pretty cheap.

Step 3: Disassemble the Headphone

Disassemble your headphones and make sure you don't lose any screw( they are pretty small).
If you look close inside the headphone there are suppose to be three wires
1. red for left headpiece power
2. blue for right headpiece power and
3. Gold for ground

Colour my vary In different brands. And there could be to gold wires(ground wire) In some headphone, you could just solder them together.
De solder the cable from the headphones.
Drill a hole. I have drilled a hole where the wire was getting out from and filed it. Make sure its big enough for your 3.5 mm jack and then glue it to the head phones.

Step 4: Reassemble the Earphone

After soldering all the wire respectively with the jack and making it sure they work, put the screws back to their place.

Now you can but a new Aux cable you make one from the wire you got from the headphone.

Step 5: Time to Test It!!!

Now just plugin you cable and enjoy you music.!!!!!!

I wonder if you could modify this project by replacing the 3.5mm jack with a bluetooth earbuds's innards and have an awesome bluetooth headset?!

This is a fantastic idea and instructable. I noticed the right ear piece seems to of broken off; do you happen to have any solutions for repairing that?

Very clever. Just like the Bose ae2's

I would definitely do this if I needed to, but I recently bought a pair of Bose QC15 headphones, and the jack is already removable. Nice job though

I was thinking about doing this about a year ago... Kinda nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks out side of the box!
