Introduction: Homemade Powdered Sugar

About: Hello and Welcome to In the Kitchen With Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. My goal for the show is to teach you how to cook really good food at home for cheap. Eating out everyday can get expensive, but it doe…

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make powdered sugar at home. This homemade powdered sugar, also known as icing or confectioners sugar, recipe is super duper easy to make using just 2 ingredients. If you run out of powdered sugar, never fear you can make it home with granulated sugar and cornstarch. It is a great copy cat version and works perfectly in frosting, glazes, baking, etc. If I can do it, you can do it. Let's get started!

Don't forget to follow me and check out my other Instructables. :)

Follow the easy steps below or watch the short video tutorial or do both! :)

Step 1: Ingredients and Tools

Print the recipe here if you like.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200g)
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch (8g)

Tools:

  • Food processor or powerful blender

Step 2: Blend It!

Begin with the 1 cup of white granulated sugar and pour it in your food processor or powerful blender. Then add the cornstarch with it. Technically you can make powdered sugar with just the granulated sugar, but the cornstarch helps keep the powdered sugar dry after it is made. Put the lid on and blend for a few minutes.

Step 3: Check, Tap, and Blend Some More

Now open up the lid and check the sugar. At this point, it will be really fine granulated sugar, like caster sugar. And will still be slightly gritty to the touch. Replace the lid and blend away. I switch between medium and fast speed on the food processor. 30 seconds to a minute on one speed, then 30 seconds to a minute on a higher speed. But that really doesn't matter. Keep doing this until the sugar because powdery. It will be about 5 minutes in total. And there you go, you make homemade powdered sugar! Super easy right? Use it just like you would storebought powdered sugar.

Now watch those steps in action with this video tutorial. :)
