Homemade Tablesaw




Few years ago I bought a circular saw and used it often, buth now i build a new home and I need a table saw too. The new table saw is verry expensive for me and i get a decision to make it myself. I get the table from my parents old bet and a door from an old wardrobe. I cut table and found 2 old doors from kitchen cabinets to build the box for future tablesaw.

Step 1:

A door from an old wardrobe become a desk for tablesaw. I made a hole for the disk with router.

Step 2:

I made 3 pieces of hardwood with cuts to fix circularsaw.

Step 3:

From an old cabinet doorpieces I made a fence.

Step 4:

At the end of this adventure I install a power swich and hinges.

    I've built a couple of these and I would advise against cutting a slot wide enough for the spring guard. That causes problems of its own because it means more wood is unsupported while it is in contact with the blade.

    Instead, I would rig a new guard on the top. If you're woking indoors, in a fixed location (which you seem to be) the best guard would be one that comes down from the ceiling and covers, but is not attached to the saw or saw blade itself. That is relatively simple to build and it gives you a high degree of safety without producing any interference with the operation of the saw. 

    That's the type of guard that use on those massive, almost industrial, high-dollar, cabinet table saws in big shops. They're pretty sweet.

    The anti-kickback system is verry usefull thing. I have idea in the future to put in the tablesaw an airbag system. Everyone can install a similar ststem fast, cheap and easy from textil bag, leakage protection and bomb (like in cars).

    The tricky part of an airbag system is detecting when the airbag needs to deploy. A false deploy is an expensive failure and cause injury itself. That's why it took so long to mass produce airbags in cars. The technology was invented in the 1950s but it relied on mechanical accelerometers to detect collisions. They're weren't very accurate, required a lot of maintenance and calibration, and they had a high failure rate. (They also used military artillery detonators to expand the bag.)

    Circa 1990, some computer guys figured out how to etch a small piezoelectric tab on a microchip. the tab flexed under acceleration producing a current. Those are the cheap, reliable accelerometers in airbags today. 

    Not at all sure how you would cheaply and reliably detect a kickback on a table saw. Sawstop is a technology that detects if flesh has contacted the blade and stops it (wrecking the blade and possibly the motor in the process) before it can cut more than a millimeter into the skin. Amazing tech but the cheapest saw that ships with the technology cost over a $1,000USD. When California proposed requiring all tablesaws sold in the state to have the technology, woodworkers and builders almost rioted.

    The best anti-kickback protection is a half-fence.

    Kickbacks are usually caused by the fence-side piece of wood getting compressed against the fence (for various reason) and in turn compressing aginst the back, upward and forward rotating, portion of the blade. The teeth on the back of the blade grabs the wood throwing up upward and forward, potentially with lethal velocity even on small saws.

    A half-fence is a fence that only goes across the table to point just before the arbor on the blade so that there is no fence in contact the wood past the arbor. No fence means nothing to compress the wood into the back of the blade. This will eliminate something like 95%+ of kickbacks.

    The easiest way to make a half-fence is to take a regular full fence and then attach a half-fence to the blade side of the full fence.

    +1 That it is the problem with home made table saws. The lack of safety features make them dangerous to work with. Many times I have been saved by the anti-kickback device on my table!
