Introduction: How to Bake Your Own Potato Chips

Potato chips at your local grocery or convenience store can be relatively expensive and has way more fats and calories than one may wish to consume. Why not make your own healthier potato chips at home at a better value? In just a few easy steps, you'll be able to create your own healthy made at home potato chips.

Step 1: Equipment Needed:

Baking pan
Measuring spoon
Mandoline or knife
Large bowl
Basket strainer
Paper towels
Small dish or bowl
Pastry brush(optional)

Step 2: Ingredients Needed:

3 Medium gold potatoes
1 1/2 Tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
1 Tablespoon of butter
Sea salt
Pepper(optional)
Cayenne(optional)

Step 3: Getting Started

Preheat the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Start by rinsing the potatoes through water to get rid of leftover dirt which may be left from the harvest. I left the potato skins on for more iron and potassium; you may peel them off if you prefer.

Step 4: Slicing

**BEWARE** DO NOT SLICE OR CUT YOUR FINGERS!

Slice the potatoes using mandoline or knife to 1/8 inch thick slices into your basket strainer. The thickness of the potato adds to the cooking time.

Step 5: Rinsing

After the slicing/cutting is complete, take your basket strainer full of the sliced potatoes and run them through cold water. Rinse thoroughly to remove starch from the potato.

Step 6: Drying

Strain the remaining water out of the basket. Take a sheet of paper towel and lay it on a hard surface area. Put the sliced potatoes on the paper towel and cover it with another sheet of paper towel. Apply some pressure to help remove the water from the potato slices. The more water removed, the less time the potato chips have to cook. When the slices are dry, place them into your large bowl.

Step 7: Buttering Up the Pan

Cut one tablespoon of butter and place onto your small dish. Then put it in the microwave for 45 seconds or until it melts thoroughly. Use a brush or a sheet of paper towel to apply the melted butter on your pan to prevent the potato chips from sticking.

Step 8: Adding Oil

Take your measuring spoon and measure one tablespoon of olive oil. Then pour it into your large bowl of potato slices. Mix the ingredients in the bowl thoroughly. The olive oil should be just enough to cover the slices. If you need more, slowly add in the process. I added another 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil into my mixture.

If there is a pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl, you've added too much.

Step 9: Getting Ready to Bake

After the potato slices are thoroughly covered with olive oil, place them on the pan without overlapping.

Step 10: Time to Bake!

Place the pan of potato slices in the oven for about 15 minutes of baking time.

**BEWARE** Check on your potato chips throughout the baking process to ensure it does not overcook.

Step 11: Done Baking

**BEWARE**ITS HOT!!

Take pan out with oven mitt or something with similar thickness.

Step 12: Adding Flavor

Sprinkle a little sea salt over the potato chips while its still hot so it can absorb the flavor. Additional flavoring: pepper, cayenne.

I added a pinch of cayenne to the chips.

Allow 5 minutes for the chips to cool down before serving.

Step 13: Final Product

Place the potato chips in a bowl to serve yourself or guests, and enjoy your very own home made healthy baked potato chips!
