How to Cut a Glass Bottle.

This is an excellent idea for someone (like me) who appreciates creative ways to diy without the need for expensive and/or heavy duty tools and equipment. What for? To make cool lanterns for your garden or your dinner table - put a short candle inside, or put some candle gel and wick inside. If you use coloured glass bottles - green, brown, purple, red, blue, etc., you get varied coloured lanterns. Just an idea.

Has anybody else tried this? I CANNOT get the string to ignite. I even tried using a hair dryer to make sure the rubbing alcohol was dry, but no luck. I had many projects planned involving this! HELP!

Using normal 70% or even 90% rubbing alcohol won't work, you have to use acetone-based fingernail polish remover. Or you can use straight acetone.  I happened to have a bottle at the house, and it worked rather well.  The problem is that the alcohol doesn't burn hot enough, and can be hard to ignite at all.

Yeah, the thread has to be wet, might even help to soak the thread before hand in alcohol. I'm assuming the less thread you use the finer the line? Who knows :P....Oh, and make sure you don't get any alcohol soaked parts or clothing close to the flame. Might also help to do this in dim light, since alcohol flames are hard to see in well-lit areas :) Hope this helped ya out :D Good idea btw , too..always wanted to make a tea glass out of a Netea jar ...lol.

Can you post this video somewhere else?
I was very curious about this.
Anyway one should have a place to report a non functional/dead tutorial!

you need to use acetone, folks. Im assuming if someone used nail polish remover successfully, it was a type that contained acetone. rubbing alcohol wont work.

I think this worked really well, I didn't cut my knot off tight enough though, so it shattered down the side. My bad. Great otherwise.

I tried with lighter fluid and cotton wool (didn't have thread near) and it didn't work. In the end I just heated up the bottle directly with a blue flame lighter (like the zippo blu). That did work only not a straight cut. Not very sharp edges though (I decided to round them off anyway)

I coiled the bottle's fattest area in a heavy cord/rope to hold it stabily sideways.. I then carefully wrapped/coiled a nichrome wire from a toaster around the spot I needed to cut, and hung a weight off the bottom so it squeezed into the target cutting line when I completed the circuit to heat the wire.. The wire will stretch too, so finding the right tension might be tricky.. I think I used 2.5lb, but had to support its weight a tad.. Its essentially like garroting the bottle with a red hot piano wire.. Depending on the bottle it may work better if filled with sand/sugar/salt etc..
