Introduction: How to Solve the Pocket Cube

In this instructable, I'm going to show you how to solve a pocket cube, or a 2x2. I suggest that you learn to solve the pocket cube before the normal cube, because the normal cube uses the same basic idea.

The first step will show you the notation of the pocket cube. The same notation is used for the normal cube.

Step 1: Learn the Notation

The notation of the 2x2 is very simple.

-The top face is labeled U.
-The front face is labeled F.
-The bottom face is labeled D.
-The left face is labeled L.
-The right face is labeled R.
-The back face is labeled B.
-If a letter is labeled by itself, turn the face clockwise as if you were facing it.
-If a letter is labeled with an ', then turn the face counterclockwise as if you were facing it.
-If a letter is labeled with a 2, turn the face 180 degrees(twice).
-A series of moves is called an algorithm.
-An example of an algorithm: R' D' R D

When you understand this, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Complete First Layer

First, find the white-green-red piece. Find another white piece that has green or red on it and put it under where it is supposed to go.

-If white is on the R face, do R' D' R.
-If white is on the L face, do L D L'.
-If white is on the D face, do R' D2 R D R' D' R

Do this for all of the white pieces until half of your cube is finished.

Step 3: Solve the Cube

Turn the D face so 2 pieces are in the right place. In other words, a piece is where it's supposed to be, but flipped. Look at the cube so the two unsolved pieces are in the F face. Now do F D F' D' R' D' R. Turn the cube upside down and look at the cube so that the F-R-U piece needs to be flipped. Now do R' D' R D until blue is on top. Turn the U face so another piece needs to be flipped. Repeat until your cube is solved!
