How to Make an Airsoft Mortar

Introduction: How to Make an Airsoft Mortar

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make a pneumatic, airsoft mortar. Mine shoots 100 - 200 feet and is sturdy and durable. The simple design makes the creation accurate (tripod is adjustable) as well as compact. You may sling the airsoft mortar around your back (due to a sling) for mobility. This weapon generates a wide enough spread to hit multiple people at once. Overall, the mortar only costs between $20 - 25.                                                                     I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES CAUSED BY THIS INSTRUCTABLE!

Step 1: What You Will Need

To make the mortar, you will need:
1:    1-1/2 inch PVC pipe (3 feet) must be thick enough. we're using compressed air.
2:    PVC primer
3:    tire valve (any size)
4:    PVC cement
5:    1-1/2 inch PVC ball valve
6:    1-1/2 inch end cap
7:     adjustable tripod (I got mine for $1 at a garage sale)
8:    WELDER glue or KRAZY glue (duct tape for heavy usage)
9:    40 millimeter ping pong balls
10:  bicycle pump
11:  airsoft BBs
1:    anything that cuts PVC
The idea is simple (very), so just glue the pieces together as shown in graphic aid one, drill a hole in the cap, slide the bike valve in and welder glue that sucker on. (excuse my language) I'd advise drilling the end cap FIRST...

Step 2: PVC Cutting

You will need to cut the PVC pipe into a 2 foot pipe and a 12 inch pipe. The shorter pipe will be the barrel and the long one is the air chamber. The deal is, I made 2 mortars. One has a longer barrel so that one has a smaller spread. The one with the shorter barrel, on the other hand, has a larger spread of bullets. The smaller one is lighter and easier to carry, so I prefer it in an actual airsoft war.

Step 3: Firing It

Shooting the mortar is simple.(i named mine Lucy) First, close the valve and use a bicycle pump to pump the back chamber to at least 110 psi for best results. Then, put uno (one) 40 millimeter ping pong ball in the front chamber. Drop a hand-full of airsoft BBs in after.Open the ball valve and hear the satisfying pop of air. The ping pong ball will propel the BBs out of the front chamber.

Step 4: Upgrades

DUCT TAPE A SLING ON! It helps so much!

Grease the tripod.(unnecessary) This lets me deploy the mortar in about 20 seconds or so.

Spray-paint it to camo with surroundings.

Follow me on Instructables!(This step is necessary)

Attach an air tank to get more shots before pumping the pressure up again.

note- If you have a team and need more firepower, make this. I made 2 for my team and use them to blast up the enemy's base or fort.

It works like an RPG if you just put tissue paper over the end of the barrel and then secure the paper on with a tight rubber band.

Instead of changing the angle of each shot to get a different range could you change the psi and just keep the angle at 45 degrees? So each time you load it you could have like a cheat sheet of what psi gets to what range.

I'm planning on making a moderation of these for my AIRSOFT field does anyone have ideas for making a sight that can tell me how far it will fire?

So the basics of ballistics, is that in a standard situation, with no extra wind, or extreme amounts of humidity, then 45 degrees is the angle at which your furthest your shot will go. So, what I did, is I set up a sight with a piece of laminated paper, and a thin piece of steel that connects to the barrel, and lines up with the angle, and has the distance written underneath. I then have a target altitude knob that changes the barrel angle in minute increments in that changes with the target altitude in relation to the launch altitude. For instance, at 160 ft., and my target is ten feet above my position, then my first angle should be at 37 degrees, but my altitude angle is at .01. This means that my overall angle is 37.0122 degrees to the ground. I also have a small telescopic sight that allows me to view my target at long ranges, and estimate the range based on a small knob inside the sight that shows me two things. My elevation in relation to my target, and the estimated ranges of objects 25, and 45 yards away. With these, I put some decimals into a calculator, and voila! I have my range. In total, it takes me approximately 45 seconds to complete the entire set of requirements in order to hit the target within 10 feet.

I'm dealing with trenches in this situation

    How far do these shoot

Im trying to figure out how to make an airtank could i just put a bunch of pvc and make the bake chamber bigger or would i have to use a sperate ball valve and do a completely different tube?

If you are looking for a air tank you can go to Walmart and ask for "dust off" it's a 5$tank of compressed air

i am going to make one have to buy the pvc pipe and some other stuff lik3e bbs and stuff but its good is there i a certain tripod i should get cause i have one for a camera at home so?

just made 1/2" one, cheapest, it cost 20$ for 1/2" parts and extra 10$ for cement and primer, so over all around 30-35$, but its worth it

    dues this work with snow

Can you use this over your shoulder, like an RPG?

Do u think water balloons would work with this?

What are the BBs and Ping-Pong balls for? mortar shells? This is very cool and i will be making this. I am new to airsoft as well, any suggestions as to what i should get for a good starter gun?

Hey. The ping pong ball acts as a propellant for the BBs. I can't get too sciency here, but the compressed air wouldn't work too well on multiple smaller pellets. If you really want to, you can probably replace the ball with a handkerchief or paper towel and use a ramrod to shove it in. All it has to do is gather the air and push the BBs out. That being said, it will still fly with the BBs but much slower and less far. And hey, if you want to ask for gun options, just private message me about it, and I'll be glad to give you some pointers (just a tip, don't follow instructables guides to buying guns)

Would the PVC still withstand it if I were to make it more compact, but still pump it to the same PSi? Want it to be more compact without losing power.

I'm not quite sure. That being said, the PVC, in little red print, should say how much psi it can take. The PVC I used stood 330 PSI. Just don't cross this, I'd say. And awesome profile picture.
