How to Create Shallow Depth of Field With Your Camera

Introduction: How to Create Shallow Depth of Field With Your Camera

Creating a shallow depth of field and a point of focus can really make a photograph look a lot more simple but professional. This guide will help you achieve this effect with your DSLR to give that professional look.

Things you will need:

- DSLR camera

- an object

- Any source of light

Step 1: Find Your Setting

The first thing you will need to do is find a setting you would like to take your picture in. If you're planning to do it outside, you will be using natural light. But we will get back to that later.

Step 2: Adjust Lighting or Object Placement

For this step you will want to either adjust your lighting or place your object in a spot where it gets the lighting from either the top or side. getting the lighting from the back or front can alter the illusion of depth of field. If you're using natural light you will have to find a good spot to get the light to hit the top or side of the object. you will also want the background to be as far as possible. if the object is close to a wall it's harder to get the point of focus on your object.

Step 3: Adjust Aperture and Zoom Lens

You will need a wide aperture and a closer focus. so it is recommended to zoom to wherever you feel looks best and then adjust the aperture. If you are not sure what aperture to use, try f/3 and adjust zoom until you can see the effect of shallow depth of field through your lens. To get the greatest depth of field you can try f/1.8. Then you're done!
