How to Find the Accurate Wi-Fi Speed

"Oh goodness, gracious! Come on! Why is the internet so slow today! I can't play Fortnite with this ping!" This is my friend's daily life as a professional gamer. As a good friend, I want to fix some of his problems. The first problem my friend has is that he only relies on the Wi-Fi speed that Fortnite shows. To fix this, you can't just always use and trust mobile apps or bandwidth testers online, either. You can do some simple steps on how to find the accurate Wi-Fi speed in a short time. You will need this instructable for finding the bandwidth anywhere, and it will be handy in times where you want to compare the bandwidth between using an accurate device and another device in a short time.

For this instructable, you will need a device (Computer, tablet, phone, etc.) with Windows installed on it.

Step 1: Command Prompt

First, click the Windows button on the bottom left corner of your screen. In the Windows search button, type "command prompt". For devices with Windows 10, you can just type "cmd". Then, click on the first result with the black box as the icon.

Step 2: Let's Find the Ping.

To find the ping, type "ping" on the cursor. Then, choose a server you want to connect to. I recommend the server "www.google.com" because it gives a measurement for your wifi internationally. So right next to the "ping" you typed, put a space, then type "www.google.com". Do not press the "enter" key yet.

Step 3: Continue the Process.

After you have typed the server, put a space then type "-n" so it represents "number" for the next step.

Step 4: Choose Your Quantity.

Next to the "-n", type another space, then choose how many times you want to test your Wi-Fi speed. For example, if you want to see the results 4 times, then type "4" after the space bar. The more you test the ping, the more results you will get. I recommend about 10 to 15 tests. This is important because every time you send you could get a different result. The more you send the Wi-Fi to the server, the more accurate you can calculate your Wi-Fi speed.

Step 5: Results

When you press the "enter" key, the test will run according to the quantity you chose (for example, 4 times). You will see an IP address, the long combination of numbers, the bytes, and the speed. The speed will be next to the "time=". The less the number is, the quicker your Wi-Fi speed is. On the bottom of the results, you will see the packet loss, the minimum, the maximum, and the average ping of the results.

Step 6: Packet Loss

Your Wi-Fi speed doesn't mean everything. There is something called a "packet loss" which tells you the percentage of times the server responded according to the quantity. For example, I put a "4" after the "-n" which meant I wanted to test the ping 4 times. If I sent 4 and received 4, I have 0% packet loss, which means the Wi-Fi is fine and stable. If I sent 4, and only received 3 results, It means I have 25% packet loss, which is a bad ping.

Step 7: Finishing

Now you found out your Wi-Fi speed. An advice is to just test the ping over and over again, and it is also good to test your ping many times at once, by raising the quantity of tests. The lower your ping is, the better your Wi-Fi is. An average ping would be 100ms, where you pretty much can watch videos from YouTube smoothly in 480p. If you have really good ping (0-40ms), you can pretty much do anything on the internet (games, watching videos, watching movies) without any interruption in the WiFi. However, if you have more than 150 ping, you might have to struggle with watching videos or playing games on the internet. I really hope you use this process frequently because it gives a really accurate bandwidth and is accessible anywhere, in a short period of time.
