Deep down, you all know you have a burning desire to wield Mjölnir.... but, well, it is a little heavy for common mortals.

Solution.... Knit a soft one! Winning all round.

You will need:

- 4mm knitting needles
- Grey and brown DK yarn
- Cardboard
- Stuffing
- Darning needle
- Hot glue
- Tape
- Knife, scissors, ruler and cutting mat

Step 1: Creating the Skeleton

Cut a piece of cardboard to 30cm long by 15 cm wide.

Score the cardboard at 10cm, 5cm, 10cm and 5cm (as shown in the photos)

Tape the shape into a rectangle.

Cut another piece of cardboard at 5cm by 10cm. Roll the cardboard around a pencil tightly. Tape this into a cylinder.

Cut a circular hole in one of the smaller sides in the middle. Slide the handle into the hole and glue. Leave it to dry.

Fill the cavity with stuffing. Run a little hot glue over the 4 sides and stick stuffing onto the sides and handle as well. Do this in small sections as the glue dries relatively quickly.

Step 2: Knitting the Pieces

Grey hammer head

Cast on 40 stitches in grey on 4mm needles

Place stitch markers after 10 stitches, and again at 30.

1. (Knit 1, Purl 1) 5 Times, to the stitch marker, knit 20, (Knit 1, Purl 1) 5 Times, to the end.

2. (Purl 1, Knit 1) 5 Times, to the stitch marker, Purl 20, (Purl 1, Knit 1) 5 Times, to the end.

Repeat these 2 rows over the next 16 rows.

Cast off 10 stitches, knit to the stitch marker, (Knit 1, Purl 1) 5 Times, to the end.

Cast off 10 stitches, Purl to the end.

Stocking stitch 32 rows (alternating rows of knit and Purl)

Bit surrounding the handle: (on 20 remaining stitches)

Knit 10, turn.
Purl 10, turn.
Knit 10, turn.
Purl 10, turn.
Knit 10, turn.
Purl 10, turn.

Cast off 10.

Repeat on the final 5 stitches.

Handle.

Cast on 12 stitches in brown on 4mm needles.

Stocking stitch 21 rows.

Purl 2 together over whole row.

Cut yarn tail to 30cm, thread remaining stitches onto yarn, and pull tight.

Dangle strap

Cast on 3 in brown as an icord.

Knit 14 rows. Cast off.

(alternatively you could crochet a short chain of brown yarn)

Step 3: Attaching the Pieces to the Cardboard Hammer

Start with the brown handle piece. Hold it around the handle with the end to pull tight at the bottom of the handle. Stitch up the side of the handle as shown. When you get to the top, you can stitch it over the top of the cardboard hammer head to keep it in place.

Wrap the grey piece around the hammer head. The bit with the grey "legs" go either side of the handle. Holding the cast on edge on a corner, tack the "legs" to the cast on edge. Stitch around this section onto the handle.
Stitch up the sides of the hammer head, making sure the textured section remains on the ends of the hammer head.

Add the dangly strap onto the end of the handle.

Using a backstitch, stitch a grey spiraling line up the handle of the hammer.

And there you go, feel free to command thunder. (No guarantees that thunder will listen sorry....)
