Introduction: How to Make Your Own Rov

We need to make our own ROV for our 3D Concept class.

The materials that you will need:

  • small plastic box
  • Rocker switches* 3
  • Motors* 3
  • Battery pack* 3
  • 20 ft cable
  • Hot glue
  • PVC pipe

Tools that will be used:

  • Rotary Tool
  • Cutters
  • 3D Printer
  • Soldering Iron
  • Drill

Step 1: Cut the Control Box

The first step is to measure your switches with ruler, and mark the lines on the box. Then fellow the line and cut the box with cutter. Click the switches in the box.

Step 2: Solder the Jump Wires

You need to switch the direction of motors when you push the switches. The way you achieve it is to make jump wires, as you can see the red wires and the white wires. Then you need to solder them on the switches.

Step 3: Connect the 20ft Cable With Motors

Next step, you need to solder the 20ft cabel with three motors. Be cautious for the negative pole and positive pole.

Step 4: Connect the Battery

Connect the battery box to the whole system. And use the hot glue to seal the connection to prevent the short-circuit.

Step 5: Cut and Polish the PVC Pipe

Cut PVC pipe into 1 inch long each. Then polish the pipe to fit the motors' size.

Step 6: Waterproof the Motors With Hot Glue

Use hot glue to waterproof the motors. Make sure there is no crack.

Step 7: Check the Whole System

Put the batteries in and check the whole system to see if it can work. If it does not work, find out the problem and fix it.

Step 8: Design My ROV

Design the ROV with Auto-desk Inventor. Correct all the measurements; consider about the radius about the hole to hold the motors, the water resistance, and the size of propeller; leave enough space for the design.

Step 9: Adjust the Design

After you finish design, check the measurements again.

Step 10: Design the Propellers

Design the propellers for the ROV. Also, make sure of all the measurements are correct.

Step 11: 3D Printing

After all the design work done, this is time to 3D print your ideas. This process may be take 15 hours or so.

Step 12: Finish the ROV and Testing

Connect the motors, propellers and ROV together. Now, you have created your own ROV. It is time for testing under the water. Because my ROV has difficult to sink so I drill some hole on my ROV.
