Intro: How to Make a Fluorescent Tube Look-alike
Hello, this instructable will tell you and show you how to make your own fluorescent tube look-alike at home with only a few materials.
Step 1: Materials
- Wire (Some need to have a female end)
- Hot glue gun
- Extra glue stick
- Block of wood
- Exacto knife
- Soldering iron
- A resistor of at least 1 ohm
- Two 5mm White LED's
Step 2: The Battery Holder
I am going to use this type of battery holder from this instructable. Please refer to the images.
Step 3: Making the Fluorescent Tube
Now, this isn't a real fluorescent tube. It should look somewhat like one, As it is white, and has the tips at the ends. Use the glue gun to melt a hole at one end of the glue stick. Quickly place the dome of the LED inside. Repeat for the other side.
Step 4: Soldering the Connections.
The images will tell you everything if you click on them and read what they have to say inside.
Step 5: Attatching the Tube
Make a hole in the cardboard. Take the other end of the computer wire and stick it into it. Glue it in place. Take the other female ended wires and drill another hole through which the wires will go like the previous. Plug the LED's' ends into the holes, noting which is positive, and which is negative.
Step 6: Switch (optional)
An old snap circuits switch is what I used; you can glue any switch to the outside of the box and solder the switch terminals to the switch. I just poked two holes into the box, ran the wires through, and twisted them together. Open the box, insert the batteries, + to the resistor, and twist the wires of the switch together, or flip the switch to turn it on.
I hope yours worked as well as mine, and let me know in the comments if you made one, how it worked, and suggestions for updates.
