Introduction: How to Make an Electromagnet

Hello! This is my first instructable. I'm going to show you how to build an electromagnet.

Requirements

  • Magnet wire (aka enamel coated wire) of ~20 gauge
  • Alligator clips
  • A screwdriver or other iron object (a screw)
  • A knife
  • A battery (I used a 9-volt)
  • A battery holder/clip for your battery

Step 1: Wrap the Magnet Wire Around the Screwdriver

Tightly wind the magnet wire around the screwdriver. Make sure you wind it in the same direction throughout, or it will mess up the polarity of the magnet. Keep some wire sticking out. These wires will be where you hook it up to the battery.

Step 2: Strip the Ends of the Wire

Use a knife to strip the ends of the wire. Be careful not to cut the wire, and more importantly, yourself.

Step 3: Clip the Battery to the Battery Snap

This step is self explanatory.

Step 4: Attach the Alligator Clips

Attach the alligator clips to the battery snap wires and the stripped ends of the magnet wire.

Step 5: Finished!

You're finished! Now find something to pick up with it!

thanks! it is very easy to build, and if it doesn't work the way you expect it to, you can just take the wire off and it will be a spring
