Introduction: How to Make an Industial-Style Lamp

We always have a bunch of miscellaneous light fixture parts lying around in our garage—my husband designs furniture and lighting pieces in his spare time. So when I dragged him into Anthropologie to look at the latest season’s items he was inspired by a metal wire candle holder. The lighting level doesn’t allow for reading but it makes a great accent piece for a little bit of light during a movie or while lounging and talking at the end of the day. It’s fascinating to sit and watch how the rays of shadow splay out across the room.
What You Need

Materials
1 Anthropologie Wire Candleholder or equivalent structure
1 Lamp kit purchased new or taken from old lamp
1 Wired Toggle Switch
3 Non-insulated Wire Butt Splices
1 Light bulb—Edison style or of your own choosing

Tools
Dremel with metal drill bit
Wire Cutters
Vice Grips or Pliers
Brown Marker
Instructions

Step 1: Step 1

If using a lamp kit with the switch at the bottom, take the candle holder and turn it upside down. Drill out the bottom using the Dremel—the hole only needs to be about ¼ inch to allow room for the switch at the bottom of the lamp holder. If the switch is on the side, skip this step.

Step 2: Step 2

Using the marker, color the ceramic lamp holder and wire splices so that they blend in with the metal.

Step 3: Step 3

Insert the ceramic or plastic lamp holder into the candle holder.

Step 4: Step 4

Now take one of the wire splices and splice the black wire of the toggle switch to the black wire of the lamp holder. Strip the plastic coating back about 3/8” to reveal the wire. Insert the wires and crimp the middle using the pliers. If there is a lot of extra wiring, rotate the lamp holder to wrap the extra wiring within the bottom portion of the candle holder.

Step 5: Step 5

Bend two sections on the wire candle holder to allow room for the toggle switch.

Step 6: Step 6

Next take the power cord and connect the second black wire on the toggle switch to the power cord utilizing the same method as in Step 4 (Make sure to connect the correct side of the power cord, this will have no writing or white stripe on it).

Step 7: Step 7

Connect the white (or neutral) wire of the lamp holder to the neutral side of the power cord using the last wire splice and same method of crimping in Step 4 and 6.

Step 8: Step 8

Adjust the toggle switch inside the candle holder and use the nut and washer that comes with the toggle switch to hold the switch in place. Make sure to have the toggle switch turned the correct way so that “on” is up. It is also helpful to put the switch on the opposite side of the fixture of where the power cord comes out to disguise the cord from the front.

Step 9: Step 9

Insert light bulb and plug in!

Thanks, Tara!
