Intro: How to Save on Your Cable TV Bill
Cutting the cord may sound ideal for your budget, but when you realize its potential to take you from your favorite shows, the whole idea becomes much less appealing. Fortunately, you have options to save on the cable you love without cutting the cord completely! Check out this step-by-step guide to start saving cash, all while enjoying your favorite shows.
Step 1: Compare Providers
Comparison is key to finding the best cable provider for your budget and individual needs. A great place to start comparing is by asking your friends and neighbors which providers they prefer. Once you've got a list of recommended providers, check out an online review site to compare reviews, ratings, and package pricing for providers in your area.
Step 2: Narrow Down Your Must-Have Channels
Once you've selected a provider with the best range of prices, it will be time to pick the right package. Tempting as it may be, try to avoid the larger packages. Sure, you'll have access to the NFL Network and more than 250 channels, but are you really going to watch more than 5 of those channels? If not, check out the available channels on the smaller packages and opt for a lower cost subscription. You might lose a couple of your favorite channels, but there will still be options to watch them...
Step 3: Find Ways to Watch What You Want
Here's where cord cutting kind of sort of comes in...Now that you've cut a bunch of channels, you might be missing a few of your favorite shows. A great solution here is to invest in Chromecast, Roku, or Apple TV. These devices are all under $150 and allow you to stream your favorite shows and movies to your TV.
For example, the least expensive package with my provider had everything I wanted except for the E! channel. So I found their app and downloaded it to my Apple TV so I can watch what I want, when I want. You can use channel apps (usually free), Netflix ($7.99-11.99 per month), Hulu ($7.99 per month), and more to watch what you want even if you had to cut a few channels.
Step 4: Call to Get the Best Deals
Actually calling anyone may seem strange these days, but it will be well worth it when you're looking to get the best price on your cable service! Give your provider of choice a call to chat with a representative. Ask about special offers and deals that may not be listed on the site. This will also be a great time to discuss your options for bundling to save on a combined cable/internet package.
