The word Bokeh means Blur and while doing Bokeh photography, the photography intentionally blurs the background to achieve blurred light sources that appear as faux gems and give a whimsical look to the photographs. In this technique complete total focus is given on the subject and not on the background. This makes the subject the center of attraction. This form of photography is frequently used for shooting portraits with a magical background. Christmas and New Year used to popular occasions for Bokeh photography but these days, people try and experiment with bokehs all round the year. If you haven’t tried it yet or are not happy with the results, here are some photography tips that will surely help you.

Step 1: Tip 1

For capturing excellent Bokehs, you would need either a good camera or a good lens. Fast lens will give you exact bokehs. Lenses with f/2.8 are good. You can also use faster apertures like f/2,f/1.8,f/1.4. These settings aren't exact, so feel free to experiment as much as you can. The whole idea here is to blur the background.

Step 2: Tip 2

Another way to get whimsical bokehs is to have your camera aperture wide open. The wider the aperture, the bigger and blurrier will be the bokehs. Change the setting of your camera to aperture mode and you set the desired f-number to achieve perfect bokehs. The standard f-stop range is between f/1 to f/22 on your camera screen.

Step 3: Tip 3

The distance between your subject and the camera shouldn’t be too much. In fact, stand close to your subject and shoot with a fast lens. Don't zoom in as zooming may affect the quality of your pictures.

Step 4: Tip 4

Bokeh photography is all about blurring the light source in the background, so make sure you have a good number of lighting objects. Christmas lights are known to offer perfect bokehs as they are very small sized lights and when blurred, they look like faux gems. The light sources shouldn’t be very big such as soft box. Instead, street lights, Christmas lights, etc. offer prefect bokehs.
