Hiccups are spasms of the diaphragm muscle.
I noticed that for me, they always happened BETWEEN breaths-
especially when I caught my breath, to speak, swallow, or change breathing direction. I then tried breathing CONTINUOUSLY--in-and-out--without stopping.
This works every time; and only needs to be done for a couple of minutes or less.

just say the word "pliers". Cures them everytime. Freaky, but haven't got anyone to say it hasn't worked yet.

If someone around me has the hiccups I'll ask them an off the wall question or one that they have to think about. My two favorites are "Who's your favorite uncle?" (substitute your own family member - aunt cousin etc.) or what's 16 plus 24? Generally by the time they've come up with an answer their hiccups are already gone.

even easier method. Wait for a hiccup, then exhale until you cant exhale anymore. Hold for 2-3 seconds, then breath. If you dont pass out, you will be hiccup free. Hardly worthy to be an instructable, but apparently 5 other people like yourself deemed it worthy. Go figure

what works for me is to fill a cup with water, and take 10 slow continuous sips (so, same 'hold the breath while swallowing' principle)
