Introduction: How to Tie a Windsor Knot

Necessary Materials:

1.) Tie (55-59+ inches)

2.) 2 Hands

3.) About 2-4 minutes

If you like large tie knots, and/or need the right tie knot for a shirt with a wide spread collar, then the Windsor is perfect. The windsor knot is a standard tie knot that is acceptable for presentations, job interviews, courtroom appearances etc. It is best suited for spread collar shirts and it’s actually quite easy to do. With more practice, this knot will take you less than 3 minutes to complete! The windsor knot produces a wide symmetrical triangular knot.

Step 1: Step 1:

Place tie around your neck with the narrow end going down the right side of your body at chest level and the wide end at about waist level. (left hand holds thick end, right hand holds thin end). Also make sure your collar is up and your tie lies beneath the collar.

Step 2: Step 2:

Cross the wide end over the top of the narrow end and hold them together at the intersection where they cross (The tie should resemble an “X”). The intersection should be right below the base of your neck.

Step 3: Step 3:

Pull the wide end back to the left side of your body underneath the narrow end. The wide end should now be on the left side of your body, while the narrow end is straight down your abdomen.

Step 4: Step 4:

Pull the wide end back to the right side of your body above the narrow end. This step is similar to step 3, however now the wide end is on the right side of your chest, while the narrow end remains straight down your abdomen.

Step 5: Step 5:

Pull the wide end up between your neck and the knot that is forming while holding the thin end with your left hand.

Step 6: Step 6:

Insert the wide end through the middle of the knot and pull downward.

Step 7: Step 7:

Pull downward until the wide end can not be pulled farther.

Step 8: Step 8:

Hold the narrow end of the tie with your left hand and slide the knot upward toward your neck until the tie feels comfortable.
