Introduction: How to Make a Unique Custom Envelope Without Glue
In this instructable I'll show you how to make your own personalised envelope without using glue. This is the perfect envelope for very special occasions.
Step 1: What Do You Need?
- cotton based paper, preferably without acid.
- 100% cotton or polyester thread
- a sewing machine
- a ruler
- a pencil
- an eraser
Step 2: Dimensions of Your Letter
Measure the folded letter or postcard you want to send in your envelope. My postcard measures 12 cm x 16 cm (4,7 inch x 6,3 inch).
Step 3: Orientation
Choose the direction in which you want your envelope to open: horizontal or vertical. In this instructable I have chosen for horizontal layout n°1.
Step 4: Select the Paper for Your Envelope
Choose the paper you want to use for your envelope.
I used Canson's "Antique White Drawing paper" of 250g (153,6 lb), but you could use any other solid paper. You'll have a more lasting result by using heavy paper.
Step 5: Draw the Envelope Pattern
In this design the pattern is very easy, but you could experiment with more complex patterns according to your own style and taste.
Make sure to count about 1.2 inch (3 cm) extra on the sides for the seams (blue).
Step 6: Prepare the Paper
Cut the paper to the desired dimensions or tear it for rough edges.
Step 7: Folding the Envelope
Mark the folding lines on what will be the inside of your envelope. Make sure to erase these lines after folding.
Fold your envelope.
Step 8: Sew the Envelope
Use your favorite stitch for sewing the envelope. Make sure it can hold the weight of the paper.
Sew the whole length of the envelope, stitching together the parts which will hold your letter or postcard.
Step 9: Congrats!
Mail your newly created, customized envelope to your loved one.
