In this project we will be making a wooden hydraulic crane. Hydraulic machine is a type of machine that uses water to move it. It is used in cranes and excavators. I am a middle school student doing this project for science class.
- A saw
- A ruler
- Sand paper
- Tubing that fits the syringes.
- (2) Syringes
- (1) Wooden dowel
- (1) Base wood rectangle
- (2) 26.5 cm planks of wood.
- (2) 28.5 cm planks of wood
- (2) 29.5 cm planks of wood
- (3) 7 cm planks of wood

Step 1: Materials
So first, if you got long planks of wood, (Like I did) you should cut them into the correctly measured piece. Once you do that, you need to cut up your dowel into 4 cm pieces. Trace those dowel ends on both ends of each piece, except the 26.5 and the 7 cm which you only trace one, making a circle close to the ends. You then drill those into holes. Once done you should sand the wood.
Step 2: Assembling
Then, you have to glue the 26.5 cm to the base and you should have a small piece of extra wood in between, to make sure it doesn't tip. Next you take the 29.5 cm pieces and stick a dowel piece in the drilled hole. Next, Stick the 29.5 in between the 26.5 and make sure the dowel stays. Do the same with the 28.5 cm, but put those planks on the outside. Once that is done, you need to place the dowel through a 7 cm plank and stick that in between the 28.5 and place the other 2, 7 cm planks on the outside of those planks. Make sure the dowels are in tightly.
Step 3: The Syringes
Using the glue add the syringes between the upright stick and the last stick(before the actual claw) and position it to where you have the maximum extend . Let it dry. Once dry, add water into the syringes and attach the tubing. Your Crane should be ready to move now!
Step 4: Modifications
Once we tested the crane we had to adjust the syringes. We moved syringe number one between the 26.5 cm, with the nose facing the wall and the other end was touching the 29.5 wood planks making the planks able to move. And syringe number 2 was adjusted to have the end with the flat surface on top of the 29.5 planks. The nose is in between the 28.5cm planks and now faces the opposite wall.
Step 5: Thanks!
Have fun with your crane and I hope you had fun making this.
