Step 1: Gather All Materials Needed
- Orange tissue paper
- Green tape
- Mixing bowls
- Measuring cup
- Chex cereal
- Caramel corn
- Candy corn
If desired, Halloween edition M&M's can be used. Additionally, generic brands of food materials may be used. For example, we used Toasted Corn, which is the generic version of Chex cereal.
Step 2: Grab Your Tissue Paper
Lay two pieces of orange tissue paper that are 8x11 on a flat surface, making sure there are no tears in the paper.
Step 3: Cut Tissue Paper in Half
Cut the tissue paper in half, starting on one of the long edges of the paper. This will leave you with two square pieces of tissue paper. You will use one square per pumpkin favor. Set these aside for later.
Step 4: Start Making "Surprise" Mix
Hidden inside of the pumpkin favor will be a tasty snack mix. Let's get started on making it!
Measure out one cup of Chex cereal, or any brand of toasted corn cereal, and place it in a mixing bowl.
Step 5: Add Caramel Corn
Measure out one cup of caramel corn and add it to the mixing bowl.
Step 6: Add Some Pretzels
Measure out half a cup of pretzels and add it to the mixing bowl.
Here, we used peanut butter filled pretzels (YUM), however, any sort of pretzel will do.
Step 7: Add Nuts
Measure out half a cup of nuts and place them in the mixing bowl.
We used peanuts, but nuts of all variety of could be used. Almonds, cashews, mixed nuts? The choice is yours.
Step 8: Add M&M's
Gotta bring that chocolate game to the party! Measure out a half cup of M&M's and add it to the mixing bowl.
We used traditional M&M's, however, if you want to get extra spooky, you could use Halloween edition M&M's.
Step 9: Add Candy Corn
Measure a half cup of candy corn and place it in the mixing bowl.
Step 10: Mix It Up
Once you have added all ingredients to the bowl, mix all the ingredients together. You can use your hands, or if your mixing bowl has a lid you can place it on top of the bowl and shake it up. Continue mixing all of the ingredients in the bowl until they are thoroughly combined.
Step 11: Fill Your Pumpkin Favor
Place the tissue paper square you made in step two on a flat surface. Place enough "Surprise Mix" in the center of the paper (using your hands or a measuring cup) to ensure your pumpkin will be full and round once assembled.
Caution: Filling your pumpkin with too much mix can cause your pumpkin favor to tear or not filling it enough can cause it to look droopy.
Step 12: Assemble Your Pumpkin
Cup your hand and place the tissue paper and mix in the center of your hand. Using your opposite hand, gather the edges of the paper to enclose your "Surprise Mix" in the paper. Pinch the edges closed just above the top of your "Surprise Mix" and begin twisting the excess tissue paper.
Step 13: Add Tape to Create Pumpkin Stem
Wrap a piece of green tape around the twist you just made at the top of the pumpkin. Continue wrapping small pieces of tape around the twist until it is sturdy to create the "stem" of the pumpkin.
Step 14: Add Ribbon
This step is optional. To maximize full eye-appealing aesthetics, tie a small piece of ribbon around the stem of your pumpkin.
Step 15: SURPRISE!
Tear open the side of your pumpkin to enjoy your "Surprise Mix"!
