Build an elegant Japanese mid century style plant stand

In this woodworking project two of my favorites will meet - an elegant Japanese and refined Nordic style. I had a piece of maple which is soft yet strong. Perfect for the mid century Japanese plant stand.

Step 1: Cutting the Pieces

First cut 4 legs and 2 crossed legs for the plant stand. See the measures above.

Step 2: Carving the Joinery

Carve the joinery under 5 degrees angle for the crossed leg using a drill and a chisel. To get the perfect solution use a piece of scrap wood as a support. This also has to be under 5 degrees angle.

Step 3: Shaping the Leg

If you want to have a mid-century style leg then first you should build a jig. The details are in the video.

Step 4: Cutting the Legs

Cut the legs under 5 degrees angle.

Step 5: Cutting the Crosses

Cut the crossed pieces of the plant stand. This will be two sticks.

Step 6: Making the Joinery

To fit the stick into the leg, cut a tiny under 5 degrees angle as seen above.

Step 7: Making the Jig for the Crossed Parts

Make the holes to the crossed sticks using a router.

Step 8: Making the Keel

Now cut the keels. You need 4 pieces.

Step 9: Joinery for the Keel

Carve joinery for the keel using a drill and a chisel. As the legs are under 5 degrees angle, then the joinery holes should also be under 5 degrees angle.
Double check the measures. Your keel should fit into the hole. If the keel will not fit into the hole, you`d rather should make the new keel then start correcting the hole.

Step 10: Cutting the Cross Under Correct Angle

Now cut the crossed parts of the plant stand under 5 degrees angle.

Step 11: Rounding the Tips

Use the router to get nice rounded tips for the crossed sticks.

Step 12: Rounding the Pieces

Use the router to get rounded sticks.

Step 13: Sanding All the Pieces

Sand all the pieces using a sander or the sanding paper. All the small details should get some extra attention with the sanding paper.

Step 14: Oiling the Pieces

We use the kid friendly natural wood oil for getting perfectly smooth surfaces.
