Japanese Tower Lamp

This Lamp is quite small for a real desk lamp I created it just for a small engineering project and could really only fit LED strips. But because I'm really only a beginner this is a great project to start off on. Only takes a simple weekend to cut out and glue all the pieces. The only thing to watch out on is keeping the pieces locked in place.

Note the wood cuts aren't perfect and the structure looks slightly wonky but if you're better at cuttng wood than me, then it'll turn out fine.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

The Materials:

  • Poplar Wood Board .75 in x 3.5 in x 5 ft (Note: not all wood will be used in this project there will be some leftover)
  • Copy Paper or Linen Paper
  • LED light strips (RGB or Single color)

Tools:

  • Band Saw
  • Miter Saw
  • Sandpaper (if there is no available Band saw)
  • Ruler
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Wood Glue (I used Gorilla Wood glue it works pretty well)

Step 2: Cutting the Wood

The wood is Labeled into Parts A-F (Height X Width X Length)

1x Part A is a small square with the dimensions .75in x 1.75'' x 1.75''

4x Part B the longest piece 5.75in x .75'' x .75''

8x Part C the smallest rectangle .75in x .5'' x .75''

8x Part D the rectangular pieces above part C .75in x .75'' x 3.25''

8x Part E the Rectangular pieces below part C .75in x .75'' x 1.75''

8x Part F The third picture Rectangular pieces .75in x 1'' x 4.00''

Step 3: Assembly

Start by gluing the inner pieces together. I started by gluing them one at a time to not risk any dramatic changes in structure, just wait for the one piece to dry and then move on to the next. The Base square has part E attached to every side. From each corner Part B is attached horizontally and from the Base to the ground it is 3/4 of an inch off the ground. After the Base is glued on the top of the tower is glued exactly the same as the Base. Once the top and bottom of the tower looks similar it is time to start gluing the outside parts. Lay the tower on the side and start by gluing Part Dabout 2 inches from the ground and the second above it by about an extra 3/4". Repeat this for all sides. Next is to either glue Part F or Part C.Part C is the small piece inserted in the middle of the two bars or Part D that lay on each side. (Just eye it) Finally Part F will be glued aligned with the top of the piece to the top of the tower on each side.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once everything's assembled cut out the paper in order to match the inside of the towers length and width and stick some LED's either inside or outside the tower but truthfully inside the tower looks better. The LED's were sloppily put in because of lack of space but it still looks great from the outside. I cut a small hole through one of the paper sides to fit the adapter through in order to light up the LEDs.
