Introduction: Keep People From Breaking Into Your Truck

About: Traveler

What's wrong with this picture?^^^

No way to lock the tailgate. To get in someone could basically just rip open the tailgate.

I'm gonna make it harder for them.

Keeping honest people honest since.... Um... A while.

Step 1: I Need Chain. and a Hookie Thing

I like this twisted stuff for a couple reasons. Mostly cuz it bolts to stuff nice. It's not über strong... But it will be strong enough for this

Step 2: These Are the Tools You Need to Remove the Bolts in Your Bed

10mm socket
Ratchet
M30 torx
Extension
Vice grips
Pliers
The last 2 are to bend the chain links

Spray on bed coating

I use rust-oleum

Step 3: Take Off a Link.

Put it on the torx bolt that holds the tailgate access panel on

Step 4: I Painted It So It Would Match My Truck

(The link of chain)

Step 5: Cut a Length of Chain and Bolt It to the Tie Down

Put a clip on the end of the chain.
It's that simple. In the second pic you can see the length of chain on the tailgate too. Where the clip will attach when your tailgate is "locked"

Step 6: Here's What It Looks Like "locked"

Step 7: This Is As Far As the Tailgate Opens When "locked"

Step 8: Now Maybe I Can Sleep Better

Knowing that it's slightly harder for someone to break into my truck when my cap is locked.

Great and simple idea. I'll install one in my truck today.

Now I don't have to have my 'gator sleep in the truck at night ;).

Sometimes all you've got to do is make things a little difficult or a little noisy. Great idea!

gmcluvvin fortunately the cap has a locking t-handle. A common way for people to break in is just to yank on the tailgate. This hopefully will slow them down

I think I woulda taken more slack outta the chain though, that way the tailgate wouldn't hardly budge.

I used to have a Ranger and I looked at a Pop & Lock tailgate lock. Pop & Lock is still available, try a google search for 'Ford Ranger Tailgate Lock'. A keyed lock might make you sleep even better.
