Intro: LEAD ACID BATTERY CHARGER

LEAD ACID BATTERY CHARGER

This circuit be lead acid battery charger again interesting instructable,
Because it can charger get both of 12V sizes and 6V. By change with switch only and this circuit charging with current about 1Amp. When see the circuit you will think us uses integrated number highly popular circuit be LM317K again. By when you Close SW1 make can charger battery 6V get. Which have voltage come out about 7 Volt. But enough Open SW1 as a result use charging battery 12 V get. Which give volt come out about 14Volt supposing that you use battery 6V 10Ah take time charging current 10 long ago hour.

Step 1: Required Components & Tools

COMPONENTS

1.Old FM cabinet

2.15V ,3A step down transformer -1 no

3.Diode 1N5400 -4 no's

4.Diode MBR1545-2no's

5.capacitor2200uf, 63V- 1 no

6.capacitor 47uf,63v -2 no's

7.Resistor 2.2 k ohm,1.8 k ohm,220 ohm 1/2 watts- each one number

8. 5 Amp switch -1 no

9.Regulator IC LM317K with heat sink- 1 no

10.General purpose PCB - small size

11.Screw's- to fix transformer

12.wire-as required.

TOOLS:

1.Soldering kit

2.wire stripper & cutter.

3.Screw driver

Step 2: Circuit Diagram

The diode D3 and D4 help protect voltage turn back from battery get. The detail is other see in the circuit.

Step 3: Making of Circuit Board

just take general purpose PCB & cut it as you required in size then place all the components on the PCB & solder it everything as per the circuit diagram also refer the attached images for more clarification.

Note:- make sure all the components have placed properly and there is no short circuit in the PCB connection

Step 4: Placing the Switch,connectors,PCB & Transformer

now take that old FM cabinet ..that cabinet it self have two connectors so i am going to use that as a out put point & near these connectors there is a space to fix the switch then i fixed it ...

next place the transformer on bottom of the cabinet , near the transformer place the PCB after placed the PCB connect the out put to output connector then connect the power cable to transformer primary side....

Step 5: Painting

now its time to paint our old FM ...just paint any colour as your wish....

Step 6: Testing

    Can I Use in5408 Instead of mbr1545 & can i also make a bridge rectifier with in5408?

surely you can use in5408(reverse voltage peak=1000v) in place of in5400(reverse voltage peak 50v) to make bridge rectifier.

mbr1545 is a schottky diode . These diodes have high reverse current and low dropout voltage. So I guess author used the above one to protect and as it has low drop out voltage so it wont affect output voltage from IC. the below one in circuit diagram has probably been used to discharge capacitor.

So if you don't have these use in5408 to protect from reverse polarity. (the above one). But your charging speed will decrease. After removing other one mbr1545 beware of capacitor so don't touch leads even it is off.

I guess with the help of an Attiny13 or so you could easily detect when it's time to cut of the charge.

I think with this charger battery overcharge because there is no system to stop charging after battery full.

ya u are correct but starting itself I told that we have to calculate the charging timing.... charging timing depend upon the capacity of battery
...for example if u are using 6v 10Ah battery to charge with this circuit it will take 10 hours to charge fully so after 10 hour you must turn off the circuit...its just a charging circuit ....not an automatic charging circuit

Time charging requires you to know the specific level of charge when you start. Very difficult and fraught with danger. Better to stop charginging periodically and do a voltage test, then continue. Or monitor real time voltage and current, and control both.

that's all correct ..I agreed with u ...just I told the example only ...the real fact is this circuit is used to charge the battery if u want to know the status of the battery! just use the battery level indicator circuit...

Nice job, the only thing I would add is an LED for 6V and one for 12V indicators when switched. ☺
