Laying Laminate Flooring

I had never laid laminate flooring before. My Gran asked me if I would like to try and lay it in the spare bedroom. I said yes I was up for the challenge.

Step 1: Equipment Used

Laminate flooring
Underlay
Hoover
Broom
Hammer
Old chisel (leaver carpet holders up)
Gloves
2x saw horse
Wooden mallet
Right angle
Jigsaw
Pencil
Spacers
Nail gun
Trim
Tape for underlay
Tape measure
Knee pads

Step 2: Preparation for New Flooring

I started by emptying the room of everything. Then I stripped the carpet and underlay out of the room. To fit the carpet and underlay in the car to take it to the tip, I had to cut it up smaller so it would fit.
The next job was to get the carpet grips up (spiky bits). I would suggest wearing clothes to do this part as the hurt if you catch yourself on them. I used an old chisel and hammer to get them up.

Step 3: Laying the Flooring

The first thing I needed to do was to make sure the area were I put the under lay is clear. To start with I put to rows of underlay down and taped them together.
To lay the laminate flooring you need to go from left to right. Also it is important to leave a 10mm gap between the flooring and skirting. This is to allow the flooring to expand and contract.
Slot the pieces of flooring together like a puzzle. To make sure it’s tighly in place get a scrap piece of the flooring and wooden mallet and hit, so that there isn’t a gap between the flooring. When you get to the end of the row and need to cut a bit shorter use that piece to begin the next row.
Continue until the whole room is complete.

Step 4: Trim

I attached the trim to the skirting board using a nail gun. When I got to the corner cut a 45 degree angle to make a clean join.

Step 5: Tidying Up

Laminate flooring down! Now for the boring part tidying up. Luckily my friend came round to help.

Step 6: Door Way

Then I put the strip in the door way.

Step 7: Finished Product

All done! Ready to move some furniture in.

Question 5 months ago on Step 6

What kind of saw-cutting tool are you using? Is this any different then the other tutorial on YouTube?

That looks great considering that it's your first time putting Laminate Flooring down, what were the black bits around the edges for? is that to make sure of the 10mm gap?
One tip from me, read before posting as there is one part at the beginning, the bit were you are doing the Carpet Grips, you said that 'your suggestion at this part was to wear clothes, as it might be painful', i think you were meant to say Gloves ha ha ha i was laughing so much i had to show my wife ha ha ha. Who knows what people do behind closed doors???
    Thanks.

    Barry.
