Intro: Let's Build Your Simple Dome With "PLLWS"!

What is “PLLWS”?
“PLLWS” stands for “Pole, Leather, Leather, Washer, Screw”. Using these materials, you can build different domes according to your wishes. Some examples are an enclosure for chickens, a green house , a partition for shelters or a small dressing room. First, I will explain how to build a tetrahedron and then continue with the assembly of a Simple dome.

"PLLWS"とは?

"PLLWS"はPole,Leather,Leather,Washer,Screwの頭文字。これらの材料があれば、あなたの目的にあった様々な形のドームを作ることができます。鶏の囲い、温室、避難所での間仕切り、着替えのための小さな部屋など。

始めに四面体の作り方を説明して、そのあと"PLLWS"を使ったSimple doomの作り方を紹介します。

Step 1: Materials and Tools Required for Tetrahedrons(四面体に必要な材料や工具)

  • 6Poles(φ20,rounded)

  • Other stick like structures like tree branches, nicely molded round bars ,wooden sticks , or paper tubes (In case you use paper tubes, you have to insert something in to which you can screw the screws at both ends.

  • 12 leather ovals(width20mm,length42mm) Open two holes(one at each ends diameters4mm),both 10mm from each end.(see file)

  • the leather should be soft like cow leather and should be able to withstand strong pulling(forces) It is recommended to either cut the pieces using a cutting die or to cut a leather belt into pieces of equal length and round the corners off.

  • 12 washers(outer diameter 20mm, inner diameter 5mm, thickness 1mm)

  • The outer diameter of the washer is the same as the thickness of Pole and there is a hole through which the wood screw passes

  • 12 screws (diameter 3.3mm , length 25mm)to securely fasten a washes and two leather patches the pole

  • cutting dies. You can order these dies at here in Japan for $35~40 each.(see file)

  • An impact driver to fix the wooden screws

  • A manual screwdriver to fix the screws after making final adjustments of the angle.

Notes

  • Please wear gloves while fastening the wooden screws with the impact drives to prevent injuriesPlease be careful ,even if you are wearing gloves.

  • It is safer to drill holes of about 1mm in which you can insert the screw in advance !!

  • If you fasten the wooden screws without holes it is possible that the screws are driven to a different direction like your hand(this has actually happened to me)

  • When building the dome, make sure that the poles can turn freely (this can be achieved by not fixing the screws too firmly).At the end, use the manual screwdrivers to secure to poles in the designed position.

  • Pole/6本(同じ長さのφ20の丸棒)
    • 木の棒、綺麗に成型してある丸棒やゴツゴツしたワイルドで強靭な枝、紙管など(紙管の場合には両端にワインコルクを差し込むなどネジが留まる工夫が必要)が使えます。
  • Leather/12個(幅20mm*長さ42mmの小判型で両端からそれぞれ10mmの中央の位置に4mmの穴を2つ開ける)
    • 牛皮のように柔軟性があって引っ張っても切れない素材であれば良い。素材から抜き型を使って抜き出す(おすすめ)、もしくはベルト状のレザー(Poleの太さと同じ幅)を適当な長さにカットして角を落として穴を開けても良い(図面ファイルあり)
  • Washer /12個(外径20mm、内径5mm、厚さ1mm)
    • Poleの太さと同じ径で木ネジが通る穴があること
  • Screw/12個(線径3.3mm*長さ25mm)
    • ワッシャと2枚のレザーをポールにしっかり固定することができる木ネジ
  • 抜き型/日本ではこちらで作ってもらえます。1つ¥4,000くらい(図面ファイルあり)
  • インパクトドライバー/木ネジ固定用
  • 手動プラスドライバー/最後に角度を決めてしっかり固定するのに適している。

注意点など

  • 木ネジをインパクトドライバーで固定する際には怪我をしないように手袋を装着しよう。
  • 手袋を付けていても安心してはいけない。あらかじめ1mmくらいの下穴をポール両端の真ん中へ開けておいたほうが無難だ!
  • 下穴を開けないで木ネジを固定しようとするとネジが逃げてプラスドライバーが高速回転しながら手の平へ向かってくることになる。(筆者は実際に凶器と化したプラスドライバーが手のひらに刺さって大怪我したことがあります)
  • 組み立ての際は、ポールが自由に回転できるくらいに(木ネジをしっかりと固定しないようにして)組み立てていく。最後に手動プラスドライバーを使ってしっかり固定しよう。

Step 2: How to Make a Tetrahedron 四面体の作り方

  1. First, take 3 poles and screw them together to form the first vertex of the tetrahedron. Do not fix the too tightly.
  2. Then, take the other 3 poles to connect the ends of the previous poles in a triangle shape.
  3. The ends of the poles always consist of the pole→Leather→Leather→Washer→Screw in this order.
  4. Once you have assembled the tetrahedron , you can tighten the loose screws.
  5. Done!!

Did you manage to make a tetrahedron? I think it has become clear that, the structure becomes stable (once you tighten the screws).This tetrahedron can be used to protect plants from insects if you stick on mesh fabric. It can also be used to mark something if you point the poles.

Let us try to build a simple dome using “PLLWS” next.

  1. 四面体の1つ目の頂点を"PLLWS"で固定する。
  2. 1本のポールの先端を隣り合う2本のポールの先端と連結していく。この時、ネジは固く締め付けないように注意しよう。
  3. 3本の先端を全て連結すると1つ目の頂点が完成する。
  4. 3本のポールの先端はそれぞれPole→Leather→Leather→Washer→Screwの順番になっている。
  5. 同じように、四面体の4つの頂点をそれぞれ連結していく。
  6. 最後に全てのネジを固く締め付けて固定する。
  7. 完成!!

四面体はできたかな?それぞれの頂点が連結して固定されると安定した立体になることが確認できたと思う。この四面体にメッシュ生地を貼って植物の虫除けにするとか、ポールをペンキで塗って何かの目印としても使える。

では次に"PLLWS"を使ってSimple doomを作ってみよう。

  • 24poles(20mm,length 1820mm) and 6poles(20mm,length 2123mm)

Step 4: How to Make a “PLLWS” Simple Dome "PLLWS"Simple Doomの作り方

  1. Using “PLLWS” , connect the 6 long poles(2123mm) to form a star shape. This part will become the roof.
  2. Place 6 shorter poles (1820mm) on the ground where you want to build the dome. (in the shape of a hexagon)
  3. Place two short poles at each vertex and fix them using “PLLWS” , so that each vertex has 4 poles.
  4. Lay the poles down towards the middle to form a star in the middle of the hexagon. Connect the adjacent poles/
  5. Now, you can lift the triangles and use the remaining six poles to form another hexagon , parallel to the one on the ground, that stands on the uppermost vertexes of the triangles.
  6. Then, take the roof and connect one pole to each vertex of the hexagon.
  7. Finally, you can fix the screws tightly with the manual screw driver.
  8. Done!!

  1. 長いポール(2123mm)6本を"PLLWS"で固定する。(屋根になる部分)
  2. ドームを建てる場所に短いポール(1820mm)を6角形になるように置く
  3. 6角形の各頂点に短いポールを2本づつ置き、各頂点の4本のポールを"PLLWS"で固定する。(しっかり固定はしないで)
  4. 3の2本の短いポールを6角形の頂点を中心に開いて星型にし、6本の短いポールと繋ぐ。(屋根のポールを止めるためにループにはしない)
  5. 1の6本の長いポールをタコの足のように開いて、4の星型の各頂点と"PLLWS"で固定する。
  6. 最後に全ての頂点の"PLLWS"をプラスドライバーでしっかり固定する
  7. 完成!!

    Oh, my stars. I've got a canvas tent with a center pole that I've tried for years to modify, but could never come up with a way to rid myself of the center pole while fully supporting the top angles of the canvas. This answer is simple yet elegant. Thank you so much.

    Your method of joining struts is a wonderful discovery. I have a laser cutter which will make cutting leather shapes quite easy, although very very malodorous.

    I've been interested in geodesic shapes for much of my life and have pondered the various joining methods. Your method appears to be quite economical, especially if the leather is sourced from thrift shop belts.

    It's important when building higher frequency geodesic shapes to have proper strut length calculations, which includes the spacing at the joints. Do you have a calculation for compensating with this design? That is to say, a perfect geodesic model would have struts of zero thickness and would join at a single point. In the real world, one adjusts for the method of connecting. If, for example, the design required a strut of 40 cm (perfect) but the join used 2 cm, one would subtract 4 cm for a strut length of 36 cm to make the assembly.

    Thank you for your interest in my idea.

    Certainly it is necessary to calculate the joint length in advance in the geodesic dome design.
    Before that, please understand that there is flexibility as a feature of "PLLWS" . I think that it is easy to understand when compared with "SONOSTAR<https://www.sonostarhub.com/&gt;", "PLLWS" is connected by leather, so a little fluctuations will occur.

    For example, in a tetrahedron it will be stable, but what about a cube?
    In the case of a cube, as the link mechanism does not stabilize, it is necessary to stretch the rope diagonally.

    Although it is stable if it is a simple Dome introduced this time, I think that it is necessary for geodesic(3V,4V,,,) to have a brace that suppresses flexibility.
    I challenged the 3Vgeodesic with "PLLWS", but I had a lot of trouble with this flexibility.(The sunset was over)



    Also, attention to the thickness of leather is necessary. I used 3mm cowhide.

    Your welcome. Seems like a patent able idea also and way more simple. The idea has me thinking about using wattle to weave between the poles and then clay to make walls. Technically, I was even thinking if the clay is thick enough... a large kiln could be constructed in this way where the whole structure is fired and then buried even to insulate more.
