I'll show you how to quickly learn to make wooden links to hang pots together, for an entire
hanging garden free of pests and easy to maintain!

The parts are simple, and the size and design of your hanging garden is limitless!

Let's get going...

Supplies

1. Redwood (great for outdoor weather) - .5" x 2" x 6'
2. 4 to 6ft of rope or wire to hang your project.
3. 8 generic terracotta clay pots. 5" diameter at the top. Optional to paint them if you like!.
4. Band Saw (in green above) or Compact Saw. IF YOU DON'T HAVE TOOLS, a compact saw is only 40 bucks, so make it happen!
5. A drill to drill holes in the largest wood plank.
6. Optional - Wood stain (any kind, see photo for my recommendation), cheap paint brush.
7. A positive attitude! (you will love how easy this is!)

Step 1: More About Supplies

Allright, I've attached some photos to show you the tools and supplies you'll need. The next step will be measuring and marking the wood!

Step 2: Measuring the Wood

Allright let's party:

First, let's measure and draw out the lines for cutting on the wood lengths.

Once cut, you should have one 2 ft piece, and four 1ft pieces (see photo of finished wood products)

Steps:

1. Take your wood plank, and measure out 2 ft. Draw a line across the wood.
2. Then measure out and draw another foot from that line.
3. Continue drawing out 1 ft lines from there for a total of four 1 ft sections.
4. Draw a small circle at the ends of the largest 2 ft section. This is for looping rope through so you can hang it later.

Step 3: Drawing the Hooks That Hold the Pots

Alright, now lets draw the "hooks" in the wood that hold the pots.

THIS PROJECT DOES NOT REQUIRE PRECISION!

Take a look at the pattern. See the image of how the lip of the pot rests on the wood. The wood holds an incredible amount of weight, check out the final hanging garden and you will see what I mean!

* don't forget to draw and drill out two holes on your 2ft wood plank section. This is to hang it from above. All other small plank sections connect to the main big piece, they will not need holes of their own.

Step 4: Cut That Wood!

Lets get to cutting!

WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEGLASSES, A MASK, AND KEEP YOU HANDS AWAY FROM THE BLADE.

Cut following the lines you've drawn. In the end, you should have 5 separate pieces of wood.

Step 5: Optional - Stain That Wood, Paint Those Pots!

You could be finished, but why not spiff it up with a little stain! Buy a spray can and brush (approx $10) and stain your wood. Let the stain remain for 5 minutes then wipe away. It will be dry to the touch within an hour, and completely dry in 4 - 24 hrs. Stain will also protect wood from the weather as it is petroleum based.

Painting the pots is also a great idea. It's best to do it before inserting your plants/ dirt. 1 can of spray paint is more than enough to paint 8 pots. Get a paint + primer spray can, I chose Krylon's 'gloss banner red'. Paint on a pot will also help retain moisture to keep you plants from drying out!

Step 6: Hang and Add Plants - Finito!!!

1. Pot your plants.
2. Hang your largest wood plank.
3. Hang the pots in the plank.
4. Repeat until you run out of pots, plants or planks.
5. Water everything with the hose!
