Electromagnets are created by running an electric current through a piece of metal to create a magnetic field
Step 1: Materials
1)One iron nail 2) Copper wire 3) One or more D-cell batteries 4) A pair of wire strippers 5) Electric tape 6) Small magnetic objects, like paperclips or pins
Step 2: Remove Some Insulation
Some of the copper wire needs to be exposed so that the battery can make a good electrical connection. Use a pair of wire strippers to remove a few centimeters of insulation from each end of the wire.
Step 3: Wrap the Wire Around the Nail
Neatly wrap the wire around the nail. The more wire you wrap around the nail, the stronger your electromagnet will be. Make certain that you leave enough of the wire unwound so that you can attach the battery.
Step 4: Connect the Battery
Attach one end of the wire to the positive terminal of the battery and the other end of the wire to the negative terminal of the battery using electric tape. If all has gone well, your electromagnet is now working..
Step 5: Play With Your Magnet
Use the magnet. Place the nail near a paperclip or another small piece of metal. Since the nail is magnetized, the metal will stick to the nail. Experiment with different sizes and weights to see how much strength your magnet has.
