Make a Gear in Tinkercad

This project shows you basic tools used to make a gear in Tinkercad.

Step 1: Adding a Cylinder

Add a cylinder to be the main part of the gear.

Instructions

  1. Click and drag a cylinder onto the Workplane.
  2. Change the cylinder dimensions to 35mm x 35mm x 4mm
  3. Continue to next step.

Step 2: Adding a Box

Adding and resizing a box to the Workplane.

Instructions

  1. Click and drag "Box" onto the Workplane.
  2. Change the box dimensions to 45mm x 6mm x 4mm.
  3. Stuck?

    HINT:

    Use the top white square to change the height.

  4. Continue to next step.

Step 3: Centering the Box in the Circle

Moving the box into the center of the circle.

Instructions

  1. Left click and drag to select both the cylinder and the box.
  2. Select Align button on the toolbar. Click on the two middle dots to center.
  3. Once aligned, click the "x" on the bottom of the screen to close the align function.
  4. Continue to next step.

Step 4: Adding More Boxes

Add more boxes for the teeth of the gear

Instructions

  1. Select the aligned box.
  2. Copy this shape by typing "CRTL" + "C" or clicking the Copy button on the toolbar.
  3. Paste this shape by typing "CRTL" + "V" or clicking the Paste button on the toolbar.
  4. Using the curved arrow, rotate this box within the circle 45 degrees
  5. Use the align tool again to center the new box.
  6. Copy, paste, rotate, and align two more boxes
  7. Continue to next step.

Step 5: Adding the Hole

Adding a hole to the center of the gear.

Instructions

  1. Drag and drop another cylinder onto the work plane. Do not resize.

  2. Drag and select every shape and use the align tool to center.
  3. Select new cylinder, then click "hole" option in the shape panel near the top right corner of the 3D editor.

  4. Continue to next step.

Step 6: Finishing Up

Finish the gear!

Instructions

  1. Select new cylinder, then click "hole" in top right of the screen.
  2. Click and drag to select all shapes.
  3. Click the Group button on the toolbar to combine the shapes in the the final gear.
  4. You've done it! Enjoy your gear!
