Introduction: MicroZapper

Thank you for your time and consideration in looking at our project, called the MicroZapper. We had a lot of fun working on the project and overcoming the challenges it presented especially from being separated in quarantine. We aim to present our idea to you in the best way possible. My partner Samaria Brown and I, Twittany Van are currently sophomores of the Wilkes Barre Area School District S.T.E.M. Academy. Our project, the MicroZapper is intended to be able to hopefully prevent the spread of the corona virus. Due to the pandemic, we want to take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease. The best way to prevent illness is to prevent being exposed to it, but we have essential and front line workers who are risking their lives every day to make sure our economy is safe. These hard workers have to come home and make sure they don’t spread anything to any family members in the household. The intended goal for the project was to use a combination of disinfectant, UV lights, and a motion sensor to disinfect anyone that comes into your home. This product doesn’t have to be prioritized for homes, it can also be utilized in public places such as grocery stores or workplaces.

Supplies

  • 1 - 15 by 20 foot tarp
  • 4 - 8 feet long 1/2 inch PVC pipes
  • 8 - 4 feet long 1/2 inch PVC pipes
  • 1 - Ultraviolet Sterilizer Light
  • 1 - can of Lysol Disinfectant Spray
  • 1 - Motion Senor
  • 1 - roll of duct tape
  • 1 - bag of black tie wraps
  • 1 - power cord
  • 1 - 8 ft zipper
  • PVC connectors
  • 1 - hand sanitizer dispenser (optional)

Step 1: Gather Materials

Since the pandemic, my partner and I weren't able to get together to actually build this device, so we took some pictures off of google to help aid you in your process of building the MicroZapper.

Step 2: Making the Base

Attach 4 of the 4 ft PVC pipes together using the connectors.

Step 3: Making the Sides

Attach the 8 feet PVC pipes to the connectors.

Step 4: Finishing the Base

Add the last 4 PVC pipes to the top of the 8 feet pipes. It should resemble a rectangle.

Step 5: Installing the Tarp

Lay the 15 by 20 foot tarp over the PVC pipes ensuring that all sides are covered. Secure the tarp to the PVC pipes using the heavy duty zip ties.

Step 6: Adding the Zipper

Add the 8 foot zipper to the entrance of the MicroZapper. You can do so by gluing it to the tarp where there is an opening.

Step 7: Adding Accessories

Attach the motion sensor to one of the 8 foot PVC pipes in the front. Attach the Lysol Disinfectant Spray to the other PVC pipe. Add the Ultraviolet light to the top of the structure. You can now also install your hand sanitizer dispenser if you want.

Step 8: Setting Up the Motion Sensor

Set up the motion sensor along with your power cord so that the Lysol will spray for 5 seconds, then having the Ultraviolet light turn on for 5 seconds. The Lysol will be a light mist, but it will be enough to disinfect your body. The Ultraviolet light is there to disinfect, but also act as a drying mechanism.

Step 9: Finished Product!

Congrats! You just built the MicroZapper. To use it, walk into the structure and zip it shut. Make sure to close your eyes and hold your breath. The motion detector will sense your presence and automatically spray the Lysol for 5 seconds following with the Ultraviolet light for another 5 seconds. Grab some hand sanitizer and 99.9% of the bacteria on your body has been killed! Now you can go safely enjoy your time with your family!

We have been happy to guide you through this journey of building the MicroZapper. If my partner and I were able to get together to build this contraption, we would've been able to have a more in depth look at it. Samaria would've gathered the materials and built the base of the MicroZapper. We both would've assemble the tarp and all the accessories on the inside. I would've found out a way to hook up the motion sensor with the UV lights and disinfectant spray. Finally, we both would've bee able to test it out our idea in the end. It is unfortunate that we couldn't collaborate down in the STEM area for this project, but we hope that you enjoy our idea to help battle this virus!
