Step 1: Gather Materials

Medicine bottle, water bottle, igniter/sparker, pen tube, glue gun, colourful hockey tape, hairspray

Step 2: Drill Holes

Drill a hole in the non cap end of the medicine bottle just big enough for the pen tube to slide in. Also drill holes in the side of your medicine bottle for the igniter.

Step 3: Place on the Igniter

Place the igniter in the holes previously drilled. Place glue all around so it is air tight. You can also tape on the igniter after you have glued it.

Step 4: Assemble the Water Bottle and Pen Tube

Take a water bottle and cut the top of it off. Then glue it on to the non cap end where the pen tube goes. Screw off the cap of the water bottle and drill or cut a hole in the cap for the pen tube. Slide the pen tube through the opening in the water bottle cap and glue it in place. Make sure that before you glue the pen tube rests inside the medicine bottle.

Step 5: Decorate the Potato Gun With Tape

Step 6: Getting Ready to Fire

Stick the potato in the pencil tube in the end that is inside the medicine bottle. Make sure it is air tight.

Step 7: Shooting the Potato Gun

Spray hairspray in the bottle and quickly close the cap. Make sure you do not spray too much or it will get too wet inside of the bottle. Then press the igniter and send the potato flying!

    Please, wear safety goggles.
Nice instructable, clear and pertinent pictures, clear explainations.. Good job on this, but please, be carefull with this little time-bomb. I think you guys had a lot of fun building this as much as you do when using it. You seem to be young peoples and something catched my attention, beside "it would be sad to lose an eye at this age.." : the extra part made with the bottle cap & lid, to hold the pen tube straight. Level +2 ! That solution is pretty clever for it's not compromising the structural and physical integrity of the chamber (where it goes boum) ...unlike the sparkler. The way the bottle is made, it's "natural aptitudes" allows the stress induced on the material by the pressure inside to be "delayed", evenly distributed over it's entire surface. By drilling it's side for the sparkler's anodes, you created a "stress point". The bottle is getting a stretching effect from the pressure, it needs to be strong without places where the stress forces are merging. (FYI, it's kinda the same principle why the windows on the planes have a rounded shape.)
To avoid this I'd use two wires from the sparkler to one small hole in the middle of the lid, just big enough for your wires and seal with glue. By placing the hole in the middle it does'nt really create a stress point for it's evenly distributed all around, not like if you'd drill it off-centered or near the side.

I'll bet 1$ there's a futur ingeneer among you guys!
