About: Hi, my name is BluDude02, and I'm a designer, tinkerer and aspiring pixel artist! I love origami, video games and music, and I'm always looking for new ideas and ways to combine my hobbies. I hope you enjoy ...

Intro: Origami InstructaBot

Hi,

have you ever wanted your own little Instructables robot buddy to add that finishing touch to your collection of builds? well now you can, with this origami design.

This is a very good build for anyone interested in origami, both experienced and inexperienced alike will find it fun, and easy!

What you will need;

  • Square origami paper (If you don't have any, just cut some paper into a 5" square)
  • Scissors
  • A pen or pencil

I'm Bludude02, this is my first instructable, and first origami design made by me. please let me know what you think!

Step 1: Folding the Body

In order to make the body, we should start with a "Balloon Base". This is a very common type of base in origami. To do the balloon base, you need to;

  1. Fold in half horizontally
  2. Crease firmly, then unfold
  3. Fold in half vertically
  4. Crease firmly, then unfold
  5. Fold the paper in half diagonally
  6. Crease firmly, then unfold
  7. Fold the paper in half diagonally from the other direction
  8. Crease firmly, then unfold
  9. Using the middle vertical folds, collapse the paper into a triangle shape

You should now have a model like image 6. Once the balloon base is complete, we need to fold out the legs and arms.

  1. Take the front two petals, and collapse them in to the center, at around 3/4 of the way along the slanted face
  2. Next, pinch the tip, and fold it out. this should give our InstructaBot his two legs
  3. To make the arms, simply take the back two petals, and fold them upwards, placing each tip at the top point sandwiched between the front and back

You should now have something similar to image 8, and we can now move on to the head...

Step 2: Making the Head

So starting out, the head needs to be a little bit smaller. Fold the second sheet vertically and horizontally, and use your crease lines to cut out a corner.

Once this is finished, we need to make another common base, the "Crane Base". You will recognize this from the very famous origami bird. to do a crane base, you need to;

  1. Fold in half vertically, open
  2. Fold horizontally, open
  3. Fold the paper in half diagonally and open
  4. Fold the paper in half along the other diagonal, and open
  5. Collapse the corners of the triangle in to the center of the bottom point.
  6. This should provide you with a diamond shape.
  7. Next, fold the side triangular petals into the center and unfold
  8. Open the bottom flap, fold up whilst pressing the sides of the model inwards at the same time
  9. Flatten down, creasing well
  10. Flip the paper over and repeat the petal folds on the other side

This should provide you with a finished crane base, like image 7. Now we can move on to the rest of the head;

  1. Pinch the two separated petals, as shown, and collapse them upwards to make a crown shape like image 8.
  2. Fold the two front and back petals down, flat, to provide a kite shape with two horns.
  3. orientate your model so the bottom point faces 4 O'clock.
  4. Now take the left horn you folded earlier, and pull it down about 45 degrees, until its perpendicular with the square peak.
  5. Next, take the other petal, and fold it down about 90 degrees, giving you a shape similar to image 9.
  6. Fold the angled petals into the cavity in the head model, producing a pentagon shape, with two antlers, like image 10.
  7. Fold the tip of the pentagon inward to the cavity again, creating a trapezoid with two antlers.

You should now have something like image 11. Onto some finishing touches...

Step 3: Assembly, and Finishing Touches

To turn the antlers into proper antennae, simply pinch twist them into a thinner cone shape

To assemble;

  1. Simply slot the head on top of the body. if it is loose, a little bit of tape goes along way.
  2. Next, using a pen or sharpie, draw some buttons and a smile on to finish it off.
  3. If you want your InstructaBot to stand up, squash fold the tips of the legs, to make a diamond shaped foot.

Enjoy your new buddy!
