Introduction: PENNY BATTERY

This is a fun and amazing project which requires little electrical knowledge and can be done by almost anyone!

Step 1: The Sanding

In this step you will have to find five pennies. With a sixty to one hundred grit sanding paper, you will need to sand one side of four of the pennies until all you see on that side is zinc. The zinc will look like silver.

QUICK TIP: Don't sand on the heads side, the tails side doesn't stick out as far and won't take as long to sand.

Step 2: The Stripping

In this step you will need two wires and a wire stripper. You will have to strip both wires on both ends. To do this, you'll have to find the hole in the wire stripper that the wire fits into. If it fits, when you close the wire stripper, it should cut into the rubber but it should not touch the metal. After doing this, twist the metal fibers at the end of the wire.

Step 3: The Assembly

For this you will need cardboard, a cup of water, salt and an LED light. First you will have to cut the cardboard into four squares each about one centimeter by one centimeter. Then pour salt into the cup of water until it doesn't dissolve anymore. Soak the cardboard squares in the mixture. Then time to assemble the parts. First lay one of the sanded pennies face up. Then place a saltwater soaked cardboard square on top. Continue this until you have no more squares, then top it off with the unsanded penny. Connect each wire to one end of the structure, then connect the wires to the LED light. Use some electrical tape to tape it together. Then you're done!

    Fun project. It would be interesting to see if you got different results with pennies before 1982 or after 1982 when they switched the metals that they were made of.
